Greetings, I have discovered this Australian community while I was looking for any discussions on what is going on in regards to conserving koala habitat in the Land Down Under. I haven’t decided yet on whether or not I should go ahead and create my own koala community on here as I recently have came here from Reddit.

Anyway, I’m a lover of koalas and had dressed my Reddit avatar in a koala costume around Halloween a few years ago. That is where I had gotten the idea of my nickname being Konala. Since Reddit is going bad due to the jacking up the API price and subreddits over there either had gone private or shuttered their doors, I ended up making the deciding to check out Lemmy instead since it seemed like Reddit, but is federated instead of being controlled by a greedy entity.

Right now, I’m just hoping that this community may be in the right direction for me to find any discussions on here about what is going on in regards to preserving eucalyptus forests. I have been hearing random things about what has been happening on Australia and I tend to worry about the koalas food supply of eucalyptus leaves. I did hear stuff about a koala whisperer girl and a koala ark in terms of koala conservation efforts, but would be interested in finding and hearing more on that kind of stuff since I’m a koala lover.

I say make a koala community somewhere and post all your pics of koalas as well as news on them. My feed could definitely use more cute koala pictures, that’s for sure.

ABC News are one of the better sources for news on koala conservation.

    The Guardian is ok too.

Sometimes I see things in The Conversation too from researchers. Also, look at that happy “aw yisssss, tasty leaves” little face in the lead image of this one. Adorable.

Yeah, I figured that having a “happy “aw yisssss, tasty leaves” little face in the lead image of this discussion” would look good here.

I’m not sure how to make this or another post a sticky post here for koala discussion, as I would need a moderator to do that.

Right now, I’m just waiting to see what they have to say about this here since they did suggest that the discussion come here when they said “The Aussie Environment and Australia communities are probably the best placed to get started on koalas. I wouldn’t suggest making a new community yet until you need to, there are a lot of unused ones due to the lack of users. Koalas suit the theme of !environment@aussie.zone

            Hi.

You want a separate stickied thread just about koalas or would you like to just add content about koalas on the regular?

You may note that Aussie.zone has daily threads with a hit or miss usage so if you wanted to just make threads per week/fortnightly we could see how much activity they have.

If you wanted to put together a thread with koala resources/rescue groups etc, we could pin that somewhere. If you have resources, I would add it to my sticky for news which is where I get most content and that needs new links if hood media sites are available.

If this wasn’t suitable, you could try Lodion or Nath later on. I’m just not sure there is enough activity for separate communities yet.

Well, I was thinking that it may turn into a thread with content about koalas, though I’m going to have to start working on putting something together here that contains some resources I can find on koala conservation, any rescue groups, since it sounds like there are some whose feed could definitely use more cute koala pictures and stuff.

Have a look into the work of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Their modus operandi is to buy a big plot of land, clear out the feral animals in it and then reintroduce the native species that used to be there. Sometimes if practical, they’ll fence the property to keep feral animals out and native animals unmolested. They’ve made amazing progress over the past 20 years or so.

Their Koala page says they’re protecting Koalas at three of their sanctuaries. You can even visit them. I have been to five of their sanctuaries - all of them were vastly different, protecting different habitats.

Oh wow! They have loads more sanctuaries than they used to have!

How to conserve koala habitat and koalas:

Stop landclearing and forestry in sensitive areas. Reduce fragmentation of habitat by joining them up with 500m wide corridors. Reduce koala/car contact. Reduce koala/dog contact.

While cars and urban sprawl exist, koalas are critical in built-up areas.
