Please don’t spread misinformation about trade deficits. That is part of the “logic” that trump uses to justify US tariffs. Trade deficits are generally not all that important.
There are good reasons to switch from US goods and services - this is not one of them.
Sorry, not an economist: wouldn’t be better for Europe to spend less on digital services provided by US companies? I thought that was the point of the whole movement, but as I said, I’m really not that knowledgeable about macro economics .
In the meantime, I edited the title
Motivations behind actions matter. Reducing trade with the US may have several justifications. Among these are to “balance a trade deficit” and “to isolate America financially”.
So, while the actions taken to reduce trade with the US may be the same for both justifications, there is a distinction to be made as to the justification for said actions.
I see. Well, I hope the current title is neutral enough, if not feel free to suggest another one
Nah man. You’re good. Just trying to explain and be helpful.
Thanks!
These “services” are mostly digital right? Like streaming, hosting, subscription based software et cetera?
I would dearly love to see a change away from US based tech. US tech giants have just fucked everything really. The EU seems to have the only governments willing to hold them accountable during the last 10 years.
Sad and true. Everyone else just wants to put their hands in the jar.
For whatever reason I’m struggling to parse the information on this graph - can someone eli5 what the trends are here?
Check out https://european-alternatives.eu/
Also make sure to follow them on Mastodon: @european_alternatives@mastodon.social
And most importantly, spread the word!
https://buy-european.net/ is with us on Lemmy: @buyeuropean@feddit.org
They’re promoting a Reddit community on their website though:That’s a different website. Your screenshot is from the mods of the /r/buyfromEU subreddit, who indeed ignore our asks for Lemmy promotion.
https://buy-european.net/ indeed has Lemmy support:

Sorry, you’re right, I got a little confused there. Didn’t realize that there’s a third, similar website. Awesome!
Yes, there are quite a few going around, and obviously they have similar names, easy to get confused!
Yet there is only one promoting/highlighting decentralized networks and that is completely ad-free…
