I wouldn’t say Varoufakis thinks he has a chance, by the end of this article, he’s pretty clear that China could easily take the current role the US has as the world’s reserve currency, but he gives Trump a lot more credit than most economists.

Has Varoufakis ever been right about anything? His political career showed him to be a naive lightweight who thought he could strong-arm the EU. He didn’t understand the simple principle that you don’t get into a showdown when someone else is holding almost all the cards.

I’m hoping the global reserve becomes the Euro instead of the Yuan, but the EU is particularly good at dragging their feet on things. It’s good that they’re starting to wake up, but I honestly don’t think they’ve fully accepted what’s happening over here, nor are they moving with nearly the level of alacrity that they should.
They’re feeling a lot of the same pressures from the Russian Far Right as we are, we’re just farther along, although England got bitten pretty good by Brexit.

I agree on this. I think he is giving Trump far too much benefit of the doubt. Trump is just one of those people who wants to watch the world burn.
Why do organizations continue to pretend anything Trump says is true? This bet was always only that these tariffs would benefit him personally by crashing the economy so that he could seize more power, and so far the first part is going swimmingly. Everybody knows that. AP certainly knows that. Why pretend otherwise?

This is exactly what’s going on. It’s been the same since 2016. People continue to play Trump’s games by Trump’s rules and wonder why they lose. They all gave him mainstream media coverage while complaining about all the free mainstream media coverage he generates with his antics. The vast majority of his inner circle from his first administration have ended up in disgrace, bankrupted, and/or in jail, and there’s an endless stream of suck-up-wannabes lining up waiting for their turn, thinking that it won’t happen to them. How many times have we seen people, organizations, and now even countries capitulate to Trump only for him to change his mind, renege on whatever agreements are in place, and do what he was going to do anyway because fuck you that’s why?
And they keep playing the same game. They keep capitulating to Trump on Trump’s terms, and he ends up shitting on them anyway.
And they keep lining up for more, because this time it will be different. This Time, Lucy won’t pull the football away and laugh at me as I land flat on my ass. Nobody seems to be learning the lesson that Capitulation. Does. Not. Work.
