  • You want to look into frigate, and you don’t need much of a graphics card. You could use a old gaming PC with a gtx 1060 from 10 years ago.

There’s cameras with tensor cores in them too. I only played around with the pi ai camera but frigate uses the same yolo models. so you can have your camera process the image detection or the server’s GPU.

It doesn’t take as much as you think. Its when you want to generate content that its important you need lots of vram or cram the entire model into context.

I am the biggest ai hater I know but local models, and old school ai technologies before LLMs are pretty cool.

  • I think this is the part where now they have a invested interest in the platform that hosts open source models they are going to start pushing the narrative that they need to be banned or “contained” and there’s going to be regulations to the point only they can host open source models.

So regulatory capture. We are going to start seeing a whole bunch of news about people using dangerous Chinese models to make slop, hack people, make deep fakes/ nudes of everyone, and make the claim that only they should be allowed to do those things. Only chatgpt and grok can hack Americans and make nudes of them without their consent.

They’re always going to blame Chinese models too, its never going to be the story about how these platforms incentivise this stuff in the first place, and how its just someone in a third world in south easy Asia gaming the algorithm using normal commercial LLM’s. They’re not going to talk about how they are the ones constantly breaking the law and fighting everyone tooth and nail to ensure that grok can still produce csam.

  • Before you buy anything make sure you research it first. Start buying things that you own the infustructure for. Don’t buy a 3d printer that doesn’t support Linux, or buy a 3d printer that won’t be effected by the 3d printing laws that try to stop gun parts from being printed.

That logic should apply to everything. If you are buying a IP camera make sure to get one that does PoE and doesn’t connect and ping hone to a server before sending you your data. Don’t buy a WiFi garage door opener unless you installed the ZigBee switch yourself. You should aim to be able to do everything yourself without needing subscription models or useless internet of things devices.

Things you likely want now before they get further ruined:

A google pixel phone to flash and de google.

A car before ~2013 that you plan on learning how yo repair when it breaks down.

A AMD based PC with a a 16gig GPU. Thats like the absolute lowest end you can use LLM’s and defuision models locally that don’t completely suck ass. And if you’re not much of a gamer or desktop user you can turn this PC into a server and run your own services in docker so you reduce your dependency on apps.

I had vr in the semi early days and I know that feeling. There was really something special about just the scale and perspective that brings child like wonder.

I would love for a second wave of vr games to become popular but if that would of happened it would of happened through meta because they have the actual sales numbers to support it somewhat.

I don’t think enough people are going to buy the steam frame and inspire a second big wave of vr devs. Its going to help the older games get a short burst of sales and those devs will just have to make a patch to be playable on the frame.

I think at most the frame will do decent, but more importantly all the work that went Into fex/lepton will get fleshed out more and more to the point you are playing full PC games on your phone.

In my opinion the steam frame is a wash and I want it only as a steam fan boy. I’d still get it if it was going to be cheap but with how thongs are going I just don’t see it being a success. I can’t justify spending 1200+ USD on something to play a unsupported/abandonded 20 dollar game from 8+ years ago. And there’s only maybe 3 games I see as worth while, and aren’t just a tech demo like the walking the plank simulator.

The only thing I can see being a turning point is if there was a way to convert games into vr kind of like that unreal engine mod. And that would have to be universal and easy to use like proton is.

  • You cap out at a very short range. Those police drones are meant to hover really high up, and they’ll often have permissions to fly them above 400ft.

I don’t know the flock ones much I imagine they’re very similar to the dji drones our police force have. They have a lot of power but its not for flying in acro mode or spending a lot of throttle to zip around its using its energy to fight massive winds you encounter the higher up you go.

It can be a mildly windy day in your back yard and it dramatically changes your battery time. Most of any of the 100 or sub 100 gram tiny whoops get 3-4 minutes tops when you fly aggressively. I imagine flying full bore just to approach the survalience drone is going to drian the battery to the point its unusable before you reach it. You’ll get major voltage drop and won’t be able to fight the wind which absolutely bullies you.

And all that is with a 580 battery which those drones kind of cap out at before weight becomes a issue. Most fly best in the 350-480 range which have 2-3 minute flight times. Even if you used fishing line that weighs nothing and try to tangle the props I still think you will have a hard time even reaching it. Just to ensure you have reliable video and ample range on your radio you probably end up spending 600+ dollars you might as well upgrade the drone too.

I just don’t think its pheasable. I’m sure there’s someone that is god like on the sticks, and knows every single motor manufacturers and their specs could pull off something like this.
