A tale as old as written language, surely.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did you attend your high school reunion? Why or Why not?
42·2 days agoI went to the first one and didn’t enjoy myself. Saw the assholes are now cops and most of the self-proclaimed cool kids were now shilling one MLM or another. Everyone still hung out in the same groups they did in high school. They held a moment of silence for the popular dickhead who got drunk and drowned in a river after high school.

7·2 days agoMy uncle once wrapped his car around a telephone pole because an orange fell off the seat and he was trying to pick it up.
I feel like there’s a clever fruit/apple/iphone joke in there somewhere but I can’t find it and I give up.

You can get away with changing it once a year as long as you rotate it every few months.
A subculture of “the damn mechanic is always just trying to rip me off” will do that.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Telus Al Data Centres Could Stall If One Vancouver Councillor Gets Her Way
21·3 days agoIn the past their marketing has always told people to conserve electricity (the thing they sell). I’m reading the switch to conserving water to mean they know they’re going to be diverting significant water from sources for generating dams to “something else”.

62·3 days agoHydro is already running ads telling us to conserve water. I think I know which way they’ll lean.

5·3 days agoI like when they just get away with it and have statues built in their honour and then 80 years later people are like “wait…”

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•"Prepare to die" is stupid as a threat. People die unprepared all the time. Winging it should be fine.
7·3 days agoInigo Montoya saying it so many times feels like an action movie where some idiot with a gun cocks it over and over every time they really mean it this time.
Except of course Mandy Patinkin is a fucking treasure.

News@lemmy.world•Crews draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool again as part of troubled revamp
41·3 days agoI think the water isn’t circulated because the water movement requires to keep the chlorine distributed disturbs it enough that there’s no “reflecting” effect.
As a solemn body of water, the idea is beautiful. As a practical application, it’s a fucking stupid idea.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How does someone initiate a class-action lawsuit against a state employer?
8·3 days agoIn general, you can sue if you can prove damages. A class action probably isn’t the right vessel - you haven’t lost money, but you have the perception that money would have gone to you.
Legally, I don’t think that holds much weight.
I feel like getting some media attention is a more effective angle, especially if you can gather enough detailed information and contact a journalist.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Most slopcode projects are abandoned and deleted within months of releaseEnglish
403·6 days agoOn the flip side, if you’re vibe coding an app you should seriously consider whether it’s something you want to open source or make available publicly. There’s a social contract that comes with that.
I have 2 self hosted slop apps I build and maintain myself. I think people would genuinely get great use out of them.
…but then I’m inviting critiques and feature requests and am roped into supporting them so it’s not just a big pile of shit that wastes everyone’s time. And I don’t want to spend my limited free time making common sense improvements to improve it for others. I want to write a lazy Claude prompt with insufficient context, get it barely doing what I need, and then spend the rest of my time eating crayons and similar pastimes.

Isn’t a döner made with Turkish bread?

Shut up, Mark.
