Technology@lemmy.zip•Digital ID debate: Privacy group warns of 'unprecedented tracking' and 'surveillance'English
31·2 days agoI always get amused by this kind of thing. Governments keep track of you using multiple different IDs already so those rights groups are essentially advocating that data analysts have to join some more tables before getting the results we’re being warned about.

Technology@lemmy.zip•EU's Top Court Just Made It Impossible to Run a User-Generated Platform LegallyEnglish
5·5 days agoNo new impact, because the ruling is about online marketplaces, which pre-scan / moderate every new posting anyway due to multiple legal obligations that exist already. TechCrunch analysis says that the ruling is too broad and applies out of this context but I don’t see it there and the case they’re making isn’t very solid. I think they recognise this as an attack on how ad industry works because checking if the ad is legal before allowing it would be a huge boon to societies worldwide, but also an enormous cost for companies selling ad-spaces.

10·7 days agoIt would make sense to sell every IP they can piecemeal to get some return on this investment.
If I had to guess then Saudi (or MBS) wanted EA FC which can now return to being EA FIFA now with extra Ronaldo. Saudi have enough influence over FIFA via PIF to make this happen.

7·7 days ago£3.1m is like a yearly salary for a team of hardware engineers. This sounds like a token investment that looks good in a press release, or a token investment that will go into pockets of someone closely associated. Or both.

1·17 days agoYouGov and ESA conducted a 5-minute online survey in the U.S. from September 26-30, 2025 among 1,912 respondents ages 5-65 recruited from YouGov’s proprietary online panel. Data is weighted to be representative of the overall U.S. population in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, education and census region. Respondents ages 5 to 17 were asked to complete the survey under the supervision of a parent.
If you want to know proprietary information that provides competitive advantage like weights applied then you might be out of luck, however publishing garbage would destroy YouGov reputation quick and so they don’t have that much incentive to fudge numbers.

7·19 days agoGoW isn’t really open world, there’s a hub and there’s smaller, mostly linear locations. Gameplay is more of an Uncharted with axes and combos. It is a very good game though.
I have an LG OLED B2 for a couple of reasons that remain true of LG OLEDs and new TVs:
- LG has the best OLED longevity results on Rtings tests
- supports Dolby Vision (Samsung pushes some „standards” nobody is using)
- VRR / FreeSync (if you play video games this is a must have on a modern TV)
- jailbroke mine to add ambient lighting via HyperHDR, ESP controller and a LED strip (total cost of something like $40)
My one other observation is that new TVs are marketed on how bright they get. It’s like Gillette razors with 20 blades but replace that with 3000 nits. I don’t have my B2 nowhere near max brightness because it’s eye-searing and reduces OLED lifespan. Brightness this high only makes sense if you’re going to watch your TV in the middle of an electronics store showroom.
As to UI, ads and spyware. Every vendor UI is horrible and will push ads on you eventually - don’t connect it to network, get an Apple TV set top box, set TV to use that input at start and never worry about that. I’m still using my 2017 one and while showing age it’s still faster than every TV I’ve seen.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Gabe Newell caps off Steam Machine week by taking delivery of a new $500 million superyacht with a submarine garage, on-board hospital and 15 gaming PCsEnglish
11·22 days agoGabe Newell is a CEO of a very small company, staff-wise, can’t feign ignorance.
That company runs multiple games with lootboxes and doesn’t make any attempt at restricting gambling from underage customers. They were restricted from doing so in some jurisdictions, can’t feign ignorance.
If you go even deeper there is evidence of Valve being perfectly aware (and amused!) that their item marketplace is used to facilitate offsite gambling on esports events.
Gabe Newell runs multiple online casinos.
Are you one of those people that think Uber is a tech company and not a taxi company because they have an app?

What’s the alternative? Exit US market and be subject to US sanctions anyway? It’s a company out to make money and not your buddy in the fight against Orange Man.
