It’s possible that the name originated during the napoleonic occupation of Hamburg, but there are other theories involving a baker named Franz. Anyway, it’s neither french nor bread, it’s a pastry.

Hamburg isn’t really a pretzel state. If you visit, get a Franzbrötchen. Beer is the same as everywhere else more or less.

21·4 days agoI see some Ford Ranger Raptors (are they really called that? what a stupid name) in Germany. Those are probably the largest trucks on the road here and they are already way too big for cities, don’t fit into any parking spots and so on. Nobody here needs an even larger F-150.

3·5 days agoSomething like 16 % of all sea‑borne trade by value passes through the Bab‑el‑Mandeb
Is that still the case? AFAIK a lot of shipping companies avoid it since 2023. And that’s also an important point, unlike the Strait of Hormuz the Bab-el-Mandeb can be avoided at the cost of longer shipping times.

This is really wild, he was killed after four years in power in a coup d’état organised by his own minister of justice who was then president for 27 years.
