There’s plenty of reasons a person might want to filter out NSFW content - the most obvious being that they’re at work or browsing in some other context where having NSFW content displayed might be inappropriate - in public visiting a cafe or a library for instance. Some people might simply not be using Lemmy for that reason and so desire to have it filtered out so it doesn’t get in the way of the content they are interested in.

I think there are multiple reasons for that. The working part others mentioned is the most important reason. But seeing how many posts get marked as nsfw, that have nothing to do with sexuality, while posts about murder, death, abuse, etc. get posted without warning, shows that there are more reasons.

A big part of the americans are scared to death by nudity and theyre exporting their mindsets through their movies, etc… Excessive violence is totally fine, but sexuality is a sin. Same holds true for many parents/religion/political leaders around the world who educate the people to think like that. Having a 16 year old kid looking for porn is a huge problem, but a 12 year old playing shooter games for hours a day is totally fine.

NSFW is good and necessary, but this is way out of balance and other things should get a waring option too.

Edit: just look at how many downvotes you got just for asking that question.

Some people just don’t want to see naked bodies. They get really turned off by it. Or maybe traumatized. Or it may be a very wide variety of reasons.

It also covers things like Gore and violence.
