A good ergonomic keyboard are usually expenisve, but there are a few cheap ones by logitech and microsoft. Split keyboards is what I want to start going toward cuz of my wrists and other problems in my hands. Also, ergo and split keyboards are supposed to be more natural for your hands cuz the typewriter like style is unnatural for your wrists and we really should start moving away from them.
I could never get used to them (earlier ergo keyboards have been provided for me and I always replace them), but I don’t type “properly” so it actually makes no positive difference to me.
For me that split is just a hurdle to overcome with… more staring at my keys to find the right ones. :p
If you type “properly” it’s probably better for you. Personally I feel the insistence on “one way to do it right” is the problem, when every body and person is different, and why so many people have typing pain. I grew up well before typing classes were standard, but in high school I had to take a typing class that had these blockers so you couldn’t see your hands. I had already long since learned to type and had strategies.
I absolutely refused to use them, because they slowed my already-honed skill down by 90% and introduced a ton of stupid errors for no reason. I failed that class, and never looked back.
I use 1-2 fingers per hand, 3 at most if what I’m doing is repetitive, and look at the general placement of my hands but not the keys - so use visual queues to reduce muscle memory needs, which drastically increases my personal accuracy over traditional typing methods (which is basically seeing the problem in what you type and correcting it, rather than seeing and avoiding the problem before you type it). I type all day for work, and outside of “typing assessments” I do just fine. My management gives me funny looks for it, but it works.
But if it helps you and the way you exist with keyboards, I’m all for it. If you want to increase efficiency further, Dvorak keyboard layout might be worth looking into!
