Hi!

I was wondering about experiences with wigs? Specifically wearing them out and about.

Unfortuntely my hair is just terrible. Oiley as hell, and now I am balding to my horror lol. So wigs it is.

I have a cosplay type wig. Fantastic for reducing dysphoria and getting that euphoric feeling but its just impratical to wear on the train for example.

Anyone had success with them? Do synethic wigs work well or should I be looking for really high quality ones?

I wear wigs. I feel very very sad about not being able to have lovely natural hair, but wigs have been a massively helpful thing for me. I currently have a bunch of cheap ones that I bought so I could find a style I liked, one day I will save up for a good one.

I wore my cheap-ass wig to trans pride yesterday and loads of people complimented me on my hair. So far in my experience, cis men have no fucking clue it’s a wig, and the women that have noticed have just gone “hey girl nice wig” and talked about their hair extensions or whatever.

I’d recommend you buy a bunch of cheap ones first, experiment before you commit to an expensive one, then you can go to proper place and have an appointment with a stylist and ask for exactly what you want.

The really high quality wigs are worth it imo. I have a synthetic one and it has been holding up really well. Depending on if you have a doctor or not, you might even be able to get it paid for by insurance or a healthcare system or whatnot.

Synthetic wigs are a bit cheaper but the natural human hair ones can be styled with irons and washed with normal shampoo. I have a specific shampoo for synthetic wigs but I might be wrong about if I actually need it or not.

I can wear mine everyday and it’s not uncomfortable. I have yet to experience it over the summer though and I don’t expect it to be super comfortable with the sweat and my growing natural hair underneath too.

I’ve been very successful with my wig. It’s incredible because otherwise I wouldn’t have socially transitioned for another year.

Specifically talking about my cosplay wig. It looks obviously fake. Still debating how much I would care.

Those wigs on the vids look good! I’ll have a look. Thanks

I like them, but they do get sweaty in summer, especially inexpensive synthetic ones (which is all I usually use).

My hair is in the many years process of growing out (it’s curly so it takes ages to appear long). Also I have a lot of thinning which years of HRT seem to have slowed, but not reversed. So bangs hide the front, but not the back thinning, but the curls make even the back slightly less visible. So, I’m using them less often, but still use them occasionally if only because the near uncontrollable frizz at medium length is frustrating, lol.

Also, I like “unnatural” colors, blues, greens, and purples, mostly, and I used to bleach and dye without too much care since I could just shave it off. But now with all of the time and frustration spent growing it out, I don’t want to damage it since my hair is quite dark and needs heavy bleaching for color to show. With wigs, I can change color for a single event.

Hmm the sweat could definitely be a major issue. I’m in australia and can get very hot.

It does sound good to be able to change my hair colour like Ramona without actually dying it lol.

Welp I’ve decided I will play around with them and see how it goes

Yeah, the sweat can be mitigated with wig caps and depends on how thick the wigs are and materials used. I have one natural hair wig and it’s much more breathable, but more expensive and not colored, though you can get a light blonde wig and color it. Just don’t recommend bleaching a wig.
