Please, use adequate ventilation (with a heat exchanger if you need to keep A/C in the room) if you’re going to be resin printing inside. I don’t want to see all of you guys get cancer from this hobby.

All VOCs are reactive. VOCs range from “Known Cancer causing effects” to Mildly harmful, but VOCs are considered harmful. At the ranges presented in the video, they are immediately harmful. If you wanna go huff your resin, you deserve what’s coming to you. I’ve talked to Resin chemists (mostly through the 2019-2020 Midwest RepRap Fests), and they agree with most of what’s in that video. Go ahead and get mad about things if you feel resolve in doing so. I’ll continue warning people of the dangers.

I’m an industrial hygienist and awhile back was contracted with a company that performed 3D printing R&D, including SLA and DLP.

Not all VOCs are harmful and, even when they are, it’s a “dose makes the poison”’ situation. There are permissible exposure limits (PELs) and short term exposure limits (STELs) for all known major harmful VOCs which provide guidelines for the magnitude and duration of exposure.

With that being said, you’re spot on about exposure to resin fumes - an occasional exposure to a small amount shouldn’t be a big deal, but repeated/continual exposure to higher concentrations caused by printing with insufficient ventilation is absolutely problematic. A little carbon filter probably isn’t cutting it as it’ll saturate pretty quickly.

I’ve mentioned this several times to online 3d printing groups and it’s rarely well received. No one wants to believe their hobby is harmful to themselves and others and the backlash can be intense. Just because people don’t like the truth doesn’t make it untrue.

Nah. It’s just that the reasons he mentions are simply not true. Resin fumes are harmful, but not because they are VOCs or because they’re polymers. He tries to make it sound like he knows what he’s talking about when he clearly doesn’t
