Hi all, thanks so much for your input on this post in regards to de-federation. I have read through every comment and have taken all perspectives on board. I think I have come up with my stance on the matter for the moment.

For now I wont be de-federating with any other instances or servers. I feel it is important as many people have mentioned to “leave the power to the users” and let them decide the content they wish to see. In regards to this I think it will be extremely important to educate people on how to block communities that they do not wish to see. If you all could assist me with that and help guide new users that would be much appreciated. I will be creating a post on this soon and will put a note in the sidebar about it.

I also am aware and agree that certain content has no place in peoples feeds and that they want nothing to do with it. I myself am one of those people. Therefore there are a few things that I will still strongly be pushing for.

Site admins are currently discussing what moderation tools that we think we need. And this is what I propose and hope to implement into VLemmy.

A mod/admin tool that allows me to block certain communities/servers from appearing in all/new/hot feeds while they will still show for users that are subscribed. This stops the unwanted propagation of harmful/unwanted content while not restricting access to it and allowing users to interact if they wish.

A user tool that will show the users what communities the admin/mod has hidden from showing up in the new/all/hot feeds and allow them to uncheck it for themselves if they wish.

I feel like this is a reasonable compromise and I hope that this will help give a balanced experience for all. Critiques, criticism, refinements, suggestions, questions, all are welcome in the comments and are much appreciated.

Love the decision and the ideas. Especially the interface to opt out of hidden content in the feeds 💪🏻

    Keep up the good work

Great job! Let’s grow out of the reddit over moderation mindset. This is a different ecosystem anyway

As a new user I want to say thanks for the thoughtful consideration and also for putting into words what you need in terms of featureset and adaptability in moderation and administration tools. As platforms like lemmy, kbin, etc, are facing a phase of very pulling and painful growth, I feel being able to communicate and boost the needs of moderators is very needed.

Unfortunately, I think this is another case of Lemmy suffering from the underdevelopment of its mod tools. The feature you described is called server limiting, and would be greatly helpful to have. However, in its absence I respect the compromise we’ve come to.

That is an excellent path forward. I completely agree with both the ideas to educate how to block communities from showing up in feeds as well as blocking instances from showing up in All/New/Hot without defederating. Nice adminning!

id suggest a option to create a blacklist of topics the user doesn’t want to see ,that the user can customize to their preference. i do think in the case of cp images, they should be taken down ,because at the end of the day ,its revictimizing the child over and over again , however i do not think they should be silenced unless they are trying to groom children. I think there needs to be a delicate balance between free speech and protecting children.

I have nothing to say beside good luck.

For NSFW content, it might be inappropriate to show in anyone feeds if not requested, even more since there is not switch to display or not NSFW content on my jerboa app.

Filtering them for not appearing in my stream if i didn’t want to seems good.

    Thanks.

Show NSFW is account level flag. Go to your profile settings and uncheck it. And yes, it’s possible via Jerboa.

Also. There is stil NSFW content that i don’t want to see to know that i want to block them. For instance child porn or animal abuse and so on.

My opinion is that the instance should ban content that do not conform to the regulation there is in the country where the instance is.

If people are not satisfied they can join other instances that allow that kind of content.

I’m ok to free speech but some regulation is needed. It will also protect those community that can be harassed by people that didn’t want to see that kind of content.

This is probably fine but I still worry that it gives too much control to the “admins” on what I can or can’t discover…

Well, the great thing about the fediverse is that you can go register your user name on 10 different instances if you wish. If admins in one place are fucking up, you can just log in to different instance and not have to deal with it.

Registering in different instances shouldn’t require migration as it would be separate accounts, no?

I suppose what is called migration refer to re-subscribing to the same communities

Is there a way to block these communities without going to the community itself? I don’t want to click on these kinda links to block them.

yes, I just tested this, on the website you can go settings -> “blocks” tab and block users or communities there. on jerboa you can’t do this yet, however if you block it on the website it will also be blocked on the app and vice versa.
