Induced demand, same as with cars. But bikes dont suck so its not a problem. :)
Also kids can use bike lanes so it literally increases the range at which kids can safely travel.
So I biked around all the time in high school but I went to a college where you pretty much did not need more than walking and many of my friends could and always wanted to drive places. I did not own a car for awhile but when I did get a job after school it was one I needed a car to get to. When I got a job in the city I started biking and was like. How did I ever get out of this habit. Then I realized a lot had to do with the infrastructure it had compared to where I needed to go before. My wife would not bike but would if the bike lanes where protected from the traffic. There are definately more people that will bike as the infrastructure for it gets more advanced.
