When they formed they also lied about there being a bunch of defections from CPUSA to them. Might be part of a larger (poor) strategy to legitimate themselves
I’ve actually never liked it. Something about it has always been wonky to me. It’s always come across what a communist logo might look like in a fictional setting rather than real life. I do like how they put in a third thing with the sickle and hammer though.
For comparison, I’ve always seen the North Korean juche symbol as the same idea as the CPUSA logo, but it’s much nicer on the eyes to me:
