If you’ve been playing with PieFed’s new Follow functionality at all you’ll notice that it’s a bit limited. Yeah you can follow people but you were probably seeing all their posts already anyway - the threadiverse is really not very big.
And if you follow someone on Mastodon you’ll see some of their posts but much less activity than what you see in your Mastodon app. That’s because following someone is just the thing that connects you to someone - everything after that gets weird. Mastodon federates quite differently so PieFed needs a lot more work to play nicely with it.
PieFed needs to:

Accept boosted toots. At the moment you’re only receiving the top-level posts that people make, not anything written by others which people you follow boost. Also when a reply to a top-level post is boosted it’s parents need to be retrieved too.

When you view a post we need to get all it’s replies, even those that have not federated here naturally. Mastodon recently started doing this where a second after you view a post it kicks off a background process that gets replies and then pops up a ‘more replies available, click to see them’ message. We need that.

Display posts with multiple images attached to them, not just one. Replies to posts can have images attached too!

Search for and find any fediverse user, not just ones that makes themselves known by posting in a community.
And probably a lot more but those seem to be the showstoppers. What’s the big missing pieces, for you?
I would add :
- searching username
- clicking on username should land on their profil page so we can send a follow request :)
I would love to see a little more support for cross-posting. So far I can work around this a bit by using a 3rd party app which results in a cross-post like this: https://piefed.social/c/starcitizen@lemmy.world/p/2187210/pegasus-class-escort-carrier
But it would be great to be able to cross-post natively. There’s a decent amount of content that we can pull in to communities to help bolster activity.
I do like the way you’ve handled the integration where the title is blank. I think it’s better than the mbin/kbin method where the title is a duplication of the entire post.
Yes we’re really really going to want to cross-post mastodon content into threadiverse communities. At the moment I find good stuff for this by using https://news.feedseer.com/ but I’d prefer to have that inside PieFed and then cross-post out of Mastodon into the threadiverse (and then have PieFed’s comment / thread merging tie-in the mastodon conversation with the threadiverse one).

At the moment, what’s the best way to cross-post into piefed/threadiverse from mastodon? e.g. an image.
So far I’ve just been downloading the image, and making a new post in piefed with the image, manually quoting whatever was in the original mastodon post, and adding a link to the mastodon post.
In Mastodon you can @ mention any community in the body of the post and that should do it.

Maybe we can use the quote boost feature in Mastodon - you’d @ the community in your quote boost and the original post would go into the community (PieFed would need some more code written for this, it won’t work at present).

In my post, I just put the URL to the mastodon post, added the word “rule” to the title, and hit enter. the title and body were filled out, and the image and thumbnail were automatically added. I didn’t realize that’s how it worked. (it makes sense, but I guess I just hadn’t thought about it before…)

For me boost and crossposting are the same thing. This list is great for me.
I would add improving the search engine. But we have to test it so we can share better feedback. :)

I’d just like to follow a few people from the German CCC on Mastodon. Seems a good chunk of them haven’t posted to Threadiverse communities yet. So I’d need to retrieve their accounts. Replies to their posts would be nice as well. Everything else, Boosts, images, presentation would be further down the list, for me.
Awesome work btw. I’ve long been able to follow Peertube channels. Mastodon is coming along now… PieFed is surely able to connect with a lot of stuff!
An ability to put accounts and hashtags along with comms in the feeds.
Hashtags being assigned to feeds would be more sustainable in more distributed 'verse than using magazines for that purpose. (/kbin ones did not federate, benefitting mainly flagship kbin.social. Mbin changed this, but this made them somewhat like tags.pub bots, and apparently some performance issues happener (?))
IDK if any of e.g. WordPress users already made self visible on PieFed, but any ‘Article’ or ‘Page’ from these federated blogs (federated WordPress, Ghost, WriteFreely, OpenWrite) should be presented more like a Threadiverse thread (just as /kbin and Mbin do that)
