Talk to any old timer from the past 20-30 years who grew up and worked in the 1950s-1960s and you’ll hear stories of what unions, union membership, strikes and worker rights actually means.

I grew up in northern Ontario and got to know lots of older people who lived and worked in forestry towns, pulp and paper towns and mining towns … and all of them have stories of being part of a union and fighting to get the most basic benefits … the same rights and privileges that everyone enjoys today and thinks they are normal and enshrined and have been magically in place forever.

Just remember that if corporations and businesses have their way and always have their way … they would not think twice about developing a society filled with slavery, semi-slavery, starvation wages and no rights for any workers.

And don’t get me started about the whole debate of ‘unions have too much power’ … that is a joke that only most ignorant people understand. If unions had too much power, every worker no matter their station of level of employment or experience or position would have a decent wage with benefits and corporations would be spending the majority of the profits sending it to the people who do the work rather than in spreading it out to a bunch of nameless and faceless shareholders who do absolutely nothing for the company or business other than to claim ownership to the generated wealth.
