They should not be a thing. At least not until there is already consistent active discussion threads happening for a given series. If I want to discuss a new chapter of something, and there isn’t a post already, I will make one.
As it is now, the dozens and dozens of empty discussion posts only drown out the few posts by people who DO have something to say.
They also show up in my subscriptions as a wall of spam, and do the same for “all”. One post is enough to facilitate discovery of the community, a dozen does the opposite.

Good. I’m not completely against automating discussion threads, but they should be a lot less prevalent than they are now, and be set to only post series that basically never have empty threads.
I have to agree. I applaud the idea, but I’ve been tempted to block the community because of the constant posts.
The better alternative is to block the bot account, but that’s not ideal either, if you want to participate in any of the series it’s been set to post.
While I agree, some highly popular titles (stuff that most people read like Spy x Family, One Piece, Oshi No Ko) should still be automatically uploaded in my opinion. These are more likely to generate discussion then the generic “i got isekaid but i have op powers from the future” manga that’s copied 1000 times.
If they’re popular, won’t the chapters be posted here by a user instead of a bot if we remove the bot?
I do actually agree that automatically created threads that appear the moment a new chapter is out makes sense in these cases.
The post would serve as a notification of a new chapter for some, who would then use the link to read and comment, immediately.
It also removes the competition around being “the one” that posts the discussion thread each chapter.

To your point as OP:
For less popular titles with low levels of interaction (like my isekai trash that I love so much, such as “So I’m a Spider, so what?” or Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation), being “the one” probably encourages interaction more, as the person will receive notifications, and be more likely to respond. If it’s not popular, people are probably less likely to respond to a bot, as there probably is no one discussing.
That said, if bot posts are serving as a notification of new chapters, people may be better served with a master list of RSS feeds for each title to follow, though doubt many use RSS readers nowadays.
I would not automate series that only have the one thread starter.
Anyone who likes a series isn’t going to rely on lemmy for chapter release notifications, what I meant to say is that for these people, an auto post is like a notification and will therefore prompt immediate engagement.

As a random lemmy/all scroller, while I watch a lot of anime, read light novels, and occasionally manga, I see these posts all the time flooding my feed, and have picked up the habit of just fast scrolling past as ‘spam’ without reading the individual titles. I’ve not added to a blocklist yet for it, but probably will eventually.
This is the opinion of someone who may never stop to discuss, but had enough will to stop in to comment about it causing the pickup of habits that treat it as spam/an annoying internet ad stuck in the middle of my content. I’m more likely to read a title if it isn’t several posts that look the same from the same sub/channel in a row in my feed. Also, any automated looking titles that look like they are from a bot cause the same adverse reactions.
