The NHS needs a uniform system to function smoothly and effectively.
Whilst I agree that Palantir is definitely 100% not the answer, we need to come up with an effective UK or EU (GDPR compliant) alternative that isn’t going to rob and export out data to US health firms.
If we were processing, we could he doing the reaearch and the UK government taking a cut of cures and treatments discovered - thus keeping it cheap for the NHS.
I don’t get why we can’t seem to do it. Palantr just seem to be the worst decision for the future.
Here’s an idea:
Have the government write and maintain that system.
Employ engineers affected by AI-driven layoffs
Ensure compliance from the ground up
Ensure it’s written for the specific use cases
Bam, you saved money, have a national product to sell, 0 Palantir influence, and all your issues addressed.
I was talking about this same idea with a friend recently. We have orgs like GCHQ and there’s plenty of cybersecurity and data talent in the UK. The government could make our own actual, secure systems. Provide setup and support for non-gov entities in the UK if they want to have government-approved security for a fee if we need the funding.
Plenty of options for the details in terms of finances, open-sourcing, letting (vetted) private healthcare users connect, etc.
There’s no need to always put things out for private companies to make.
I, as a software engineer (albeit I specialise in mobile apps) would gladly work on such projects. I mean come on its a no brainer. Work that 1, benefits the public 2, pays my bills 3, actually takes cybersec and good practices into account, not as an afterthought? Sign me the fuck up.
Paying…commoners…?
No no no that will never do
if it’s run by the UK govt, they’ll hand all the data over to the US anyway. the UK’s in five eyes.
Judging by the news, it’ll be 4 eyes soon enough.
The WHAT deal?!
Are we not covered by any gdpr type data protection anymore? Because I definitely have never and woul never agree that my medical information and history can be given to a military technology company.
This is additionally more ridiculous given that UK government has a good internal digital team
