As a kid I never got into the Bluth works, they always seemed so sloppy and amateur compared to the Disney films from the same era but in adulthood I appreciate how they experimented more and integrated darker themes and choose to be spicy when Disney chose to be bland.

Secret of Nimh, Ferngully, Anastasia all come to mind

LOL, omg right? The bit where Charlie dreams he’s being sent to hell literally fucked me up as a kid. I had no idea what was going on there, but I wanted no part of that. I used to close my eyes when that part came on screen. 10/10, would let Don Bluth traumatize me as a child again.

Edited to add: I love how the studio execs changed a the tommy gun into a “ray” gun, because that was too scary, but literally let Bluth send the MC to a fully artistically realized hell for an entire scene…

Isn’t it weird when you look back at happy feet and that one tumbling section?

Honestly, a lot of movies have darker references you never would’ve gotten as a child and all of a sudden your movie (or show, etc) feels like it was made for you for too long. I dunno, it’s weird.
