I no longer care. I’m sick of being blinded by LED headlights.

also, you often can’t even tell what it is that’s blinding you, so it could be a Corolla as easily as a truck

I still have fond memories of driving at night before all these bright as fuck led headlights.

I learned to drive on a 1985 jeep, and it practically had glow worms in jam jars for headlights and I never had an issue, but for some fucking reason every single car needs to be as bright as a collapsed sun.

Not to mention the people with horribly aimed headlights.

yeah, the aiming makes it worse for sure. like the lights just shouldn’t be that bright to begin with, because blinding people as they crest a hill is stupid as fuck, but there’s absolutely no call to be blinding people on flat level ground.

unfortunately people often claim that they’re fine because they’re aligned properly on flat level ground, and ignore the fact that they do not drive exclusively on flat level ground free of bumps and inclines and differences in elevation with those around them

it’s still wild to me that we’ve made lights so bright that we need to limit how far down the road they can see so that they don’t blind oncoming traffic and send them barreling headfirst into you on a curvy hill crest

like… just make them not blinding and then we can see farther down the road again? and everybody can see? and make highbeams as bright as you want because who cares because you only turn those only when you’re not going to hit anyone with them?

this is pretty much what I’m going to do on my car, when I get around to it

they get the polite typical quick highbeam flash to let them know they’re blinding me. then the highbeams stay on. then they turn their highbeams on, which is noticed because the treetops are now lit up (but there is no difference in the light hitting my face). then they get multiple light bars, maybe with some strobe. idk.

idgaf. I’m sick of this shit. fuck people who drive around blinding. everybody because iT cAmE tHaT wAy. fucking sick of it.

I think it would be funny if someone created a website for people to upload pictures of these big trucks and we all rate how gay the trucks are. Half of them already have truck nuts anyway, so they’re basically pretending to ride around in giant penises. Seems pretty gay. Biggaytrucks.com anyone?

Sometimes they’ll be marked as handicap vehicles too and park there. Like, I get if you have a physical handicap that makes it tough to walk long distance, but if you can climb 2 feet to get into your giant truck, I don’t know what possible physical impairment you have. I live in an area with pavement princesses everywhere. It’s ridiculous.

Ehh, prosthetics would do it. You have a point, to a point tho. Some people are also disabled in ways that come and go. Then you have people who got disabled recently but haven’t sold the car yet for something reasonable. Then you have some where they cart around disabled family members.

Yeah, i’m totally sure 80% of jacked-up trucks with disabled tags are just hamming it, but I wouldn’t want to fuck over the 20%

Part of the issue is that people and manufacturers use shitty lights that are bright but don’t illuminate very well even though they’re so bright.

Like the difference between a nice even sound at a live concert vs old horn speakers being overdriven.

So the issue is partially shitty vehicles with mal-aimed headlights, partially shitty headlight technology, and once again also, corruption.

I always had this want to setup a small computer and a mirror on servos.

calculate where both the headlights are height wise and derrive where the driver’s eyes are and just beam their lights back into thier own eyes.

of course, then, when they hit you and the cops see the rig, you’ll get right fucked.

Gently sloping roads are the biggest issue. I have a 2024 WRX. My headlights are absurdly bright. They generally point at the grille and below of cars, but if I’m going slightly downhill and a car is coming slightly uphill, it’s going to be in their windshield. I get flashed, I turn off my headlights entirely, we collide. There’s no winning.

If your lights are too bright that’s a genuine problem. Replace them. Call it a defect and make the dealer or manufacturer do it if you can. Otherwise, pay for it yourself, I don’t care, just fucking fix it so you’re not a hazard to everyone else.

The reason we’re in this stupid goddamn situation in the first place is no one taking responsibility for endangering others.

Except they’re not, they’re fine. Except in specific situations where the lights are naturally pointed into someone else’s windshield and they think I’ve got the high beams on. I thought I wrote that but it may not have been clear.

I accept. I grew up on headlights that were definitely dim by comparison, and so modern headlights for sure are bright. I think angle is the important thing. In 85% of situations it’s perfect, but sometimes the road pulls them up into other vehicles’ windshields.

I know Mercedes had some technology to basically shut off that part of the light, so as to never blind other drivers. IIRC it was made illegal in the US.

I mean what do you call a driver who can only stay in his lane 85% of the time??

Bulbs are like $20 bucks max, just change them out it’s probably the easiest thing to do a vehicle, even changing the oil is a little bit more effort.

The bulbs are much more expensive than that, but I think what’s worth approaching is adjusting the point of the headlights. Like I said, from my point of view, they’re generally aimed at license plates and below of the cars in front of me, but it can’t hurt to adjust and see how/if it helps.

I’m familiar with modern Subarus. the headlights are blinding. your own experience shows you this.

when I flash you, it’s not because I think you have your high beams on. I do not give a fuck what type of headlight you have on, I can’t see

I would rather your headlights be off than be blinding. it is actually safer that way. we can see you without them, and you have DRLs anyways. I’ve pondered this many a time when being blinded by somebody when it’s not even actually dark out yet
