At the beginning of the movie, Will Smith’s character says “Fairy lives don’t matter today” and stomps a little fairy to death what-the-hell

Directed by David Ayer, who among other things directed the piece of copaganda horseshit End of Watch, and written by nepo baby sex pest Max Landis.

  • Training Day is probably the only one of his (David Ayer) movies I like and watch from time to time. There is still a lot of LA political meddling with the movie, in my opinion. Sort of a misdirection from the realities of CRASH and Rampart. The studio wanted to cut some of the higher-level corruption plot from the movie. It’s not as good on politics as it could be but it’s enjoyable enough as a movie.

End of Watch is a literal fairy tale. It’s obvious Training Day only worked as well as it did because of the actors and Antoine Fuqua. I think both movies are good looks at how Hollywood handles cops before and after 9/11. If End of Watch came out in 2004 it would have won oscars. The second best time for it to come out would have been during 2020-2021. But then there would be a BLM subplot where the cops try to genuinely help protestors before someone throws a brick at their head, proving how dangerous these protests are for our good family-oriented officers.

Bright is like the intersection of several things. It’s the Will Smith decline meeting Hollywood trying to re-create the MIB-era of Will Smith greatness. It’s Ayer trying to reinvent his shtick of cops in LA, even kind of hoping that Smith could give a Denzel-like performance (he could never). It’s Netflix and Landis grabbing hot-topic social media BLM discourse as script-fodder. I wouldn’t even go as far to say it’s copaganda because I don’t even think Netflix gave enough of a fuck to try. They just picked “urban fantasy” and “buddy cop” out of a hat. Everyone else was too self-involved to agree on a overarching political narrative. The “fairy-lives don’t matter” shit is just Will trying to play a cop like Denzel, but failing because he sucks, while being fed a script by a human LLM.

Very likely, since the TV show The Shield was supposed to be called Rampart before the LAPD threw a hissy fit.

Watched and instantly forgot because it’s so forgettable.

What are we talking about again?

I am very dense and I noped out of watching it when I heard that. Not immidiately, though. It took some time to process that this shit’s got translated into russian and that I hear that dogwhistle dubbed in a whole another language.

there’s probably something to examine about how human-supremacy would be different from white supremacy but there’s no way hollywood would make that. maybe Ryan Coogler if he wanted to push for it.

Have colonialists not actually believed for long stretches of history that race was actually species? Why would we expect a different type of racism?

it depends on the story somebody wants to tell. i think it’s at least plausible that the existence of elves and shit would compress how society perceives differences between humans if they were here all along. to the extent race was invented to justify enslaving converts maybe that doesn’t happen, it all gets very fraught very quickly with where you place non-human societies geographically and you don’t want to use them as stand-ins or replacements for actual human cultures.

That’s actually a strain on segregation and apartheid; people with passing complexion being treated like they’re members of the lower racial caste only raise the contradictions. Then there’s the way people in interracial relationships are forced to confront the racism their partner and child faces, radicalizing them against their own privileges and further raising the contradictions.

That’s why mixed race relationships get outlawed in the first place.

Released back when people were still watching Netflix films with the hope that they might eventually make a good one.

Have you considered though, as a white guy, this makes me feel better about my white guilt and teaches those people important lessons about how racism is over and they should just stop complaining so much?

Modern fantasy with all your standard d&d species in there is not inherently a bad idea, but every decision about the execution was the worst possible decision
