This reminds me of when I was first reading about the DPRK sending munitions to the Russian military, before they got involved with troops. I was reading the world news comments on .world as I am wont to do for unclear reasons, and someone said something about “whatever rice-filled horror shells the north koreans send to Russia”. That phrase stuck with me. Obviously racist as fuck, obviously playing into the strong/weak duality, but what reminds me of it here is the sort of guffawing dipshit “amirite??” quality to the racism. It’s just so fuckin ignominious and sluglike, like watching someone shit their pants out of sheer laziness. And then they look at you expecting you to join in, and it makes you wonder if they’re an alien or if you are.

It takes a special kind of focussed and vile hatred to instantly twist someone’s words like that. Very happy people I’m sure.

    • Yeah, they need to define Literacy here. The west barely has a double digit literacy rate despite all the propaganda saying we got a 99% literacy rate. We add all the levels together to get the magic 99%, basically anyone who recognizes the letters of the alphabet gets called literate. When in reality, only ~11% of western adults can score high enough to be called “Literate”. You only need to score 65% on the test. Thats lower than a passing grade in trade schools.

If for example 10% of grade one students are literate, 25% of grade two students are, 50% of grade three students are and 65% of grade four students are, then that’s already 150% student literacy, so I don’t know what the issue is here

Just a note on the literacy test that I’m assuming you’re talking about: it’s divided into 5 tiers of competency where in practical terms “literacy” in the sense of being able to read and comprehend complicated and technical texts maxes out around the fourth tier, with the fifth revolving around inferring information that isn’t present in the text or making educated guesses when a text is ambiguous. It’s also designed with the idea that someone who is competent in a tier will still fail questions of that tier a majority (IIRC) of the time but will get almost all questions of a lower tier correct.

The 11% number for “full literacy” is based on people who score in the fifth tier, meaning they can do things like extract missing information from a dense academic text with a sort of ok accuracy.

Or at least that’s the idea, anyways. I don’t know what the actual test itself is like, but the sample questions I saw were all piss easy even for the highest level.

4th tier. But yeah, the tests are super easy which makes the literacy rate in the west super embarrassing.

The breakdown has the vast majority under the 4th level. With 4 and 5 added together, its 11% from what I last saw.
