    From the article:

    The approval drew an outcry from members of the “First Wives Advocacy Group,” a coalition of mostly older women who receive permanent alimony and who assert that their lives will be upended without the payments.

    Bold added by me. Here’s how I read it, though it’s a smidge of speculation I’ll admit.

    These are probably boomers. These women grew up at a time where women were not encouraged to (and were maybe actively discouraged) go to college or develop any skills aside from being homemakers to their husbands. They likely never learned skills that they could support themselves with, and are now in the autumn or winter of their lives. Living on alimony all this time was only natural given how they were raised, and it’s way too late to go find a career now.
