So I stopped using a community do to a post seemingly being removed. Feedback on things is not great for what im working from now and im not good with using the modlog link areas and such. Now I had someone relate to me to post on this about that but im like. Nah seems like a drama thing. Thing is I have got 404’s what I assume is removed links and they seem like relatively legit posts. One was from stamets saying why he is leaving on casual conversation and I know that user is pretty legit so it seems like his and the others I have seen is based on mods not liking the content. So im writing here just to find out if other folks are seeing this. I mean we are the federation so can just move on to some other place. I may just now block communities that have a bs removal as I don’t want to associate with whoever is doing the bs mods. What do people think?

Adding some as I think I have issues getting to the point. My end questions are:

If people have seen heavier handed mod activity in like lets say the past month?

What people do about it?

That has mine. I stopped posting to the community just after the stuff 12 days ago. I had a string of wierdisms around it with a user who replicates my posts from another community to that one I no longer post in and then piefed had a view change which got me to a convo where I at least was able to understand it better. It just happens that I then have noticed the removed items for another user which made me want to start up this meta conversation.

You are talking about it being in stamets goodbye thread which is afaik less than 24 hours old. I see nothing of yours that recent.

What’s the point of making a goodbye post only to delete it?

I wish he had deleted everything except that. Instances such as Discuss.Online and PieFed.social did not even have time to receive the post before the account is gone now.:-(

Stamets will definitely be missed 😭

They mass-deleted almost every comment they’ve made, by the looks of it. Most of their posts are still up.

maybe I was not clear. im saying I had an issue with a removed post and it got real wierd due to some other things but then today I noticed some removed posts. so they show in the feed as long as you don’t refresh but go to 404’s. I did not comment on his post because it was removed by the time I saw it. I know the user though and am surprised both that his would be removed and that it likely talked about other removal activity in other communities (that last part is a guess)

This is simply how most (really, probably all) Fediverse software handles removed items. Lemmy and PieFed for certain, and I am not sure about Mbin. Ideally the page would say something like “this used to be a post but it’s gone now…”, but instead it gives simply an error that says 404 and to try again later - like… REALLY???😂

This is extremely context-specific. But it would definitely be nice if posts were still accessible even if they were removed from communities, especially if there’s a difference between somebody breaking a community’s rules versus breaking their instance’s rules.

For example: you might have posted something that is otherwise unobjectionable but off topic in a community. The only way for a moderator to remove it is to fully censor not just your post, but also every comment under it.

This would help a lot. I found I was not even sure if my post had been removed and posted again and then guessed that it had. I could not message the remover and ask why or anything.

Pretty sure Stamets deleted that post himself. The community hasn’t had a mod action in four days: https://lemm.ee/modlog/6486

On the web UI you can go to a community’s modlog at the bottom of the sidebar to check out this sort of stuff. Or you can look up a certain user in the modlog.
