Definitely the best Pope there ever was (especially when compared to the super reactionary ones.)
Catholic comrade here.
I think Pope Francis was the best pope the world has ever had.
He called every afternoon to Gaza since the genocide started. I repeat EVERY AFTERNOON.
He recognized LGBT people as worthy as heaven as anyone else. He said that antiLGBT priests were agents of evil.
He negotiated the end of Cuban embargo (during Obama). Later Trump put it againg.
He is loved by our cuban comrades.
He kissed feet of 4 warlords during South Sudan civil war to stop the war.
He denounces Israel warcrimes.
He blessed LGBT people. (But tbh still didnt recognize same sex marriage)
He interviewed and had meetings with several trans people.
His last action was to name A WOMAN as governor of the vatican state. The first woman ever.
He push towards women inclusion in high church ranks.
He write an Encyclica about GLOBAL WARMING, THE DANGER OF CONSUMERISM, CARING ABOUT OUR ECOSYSTEM AND ABOUT IRRESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT.
And that’s just a fraction of what he did.
If we could kill the Vatican next that’d be dope
The embodiment of lip service
Empty balloon, whatever he ever said, had no impact on material conditions nor actions of church.
An embodiment of Latin centre-left Catholicism. Not a real comrade, but progressive in issues that aren’t key to the Church. Preaches love and peace which, although with its contradictions, is consistent enough to denounce the greatest atrocities out our time. A “live and let live” Pope, for better or for worse.
Given the Church’s role as a reactionary cudgel over the past 200 years, and specifically during the Cold War, he was a breath of fresh air. Can’t wait for some out of touch European to start telling third worlders how to pray the proper German way again.
I hope to see the collapse of the catholic church in my lifetime (lowercase here for disrespect).
it was the leader of a reactionary institution, anti-abortion, and (not-so) homophobic…but at the same time it was a comrade (if we believe in ghouls like javier milei)
Very vocally pro Palestine which says quite a bit. The bar for a pope is basically in hell and he’s certainly cleared it and some.
His history in Argentina is damning: https://socialism.com/fs-article/pope-francis-the-catholic-church-and-argentinas-dirty-war/
Pope Francis. During the military junta, Fr. Jorge Bergoglio headed the influential Argentine Jesuit order of priests. His own politics were openly conservative and anti-communist. He was deeply hostile to liberation theology which focused on the needs of the poor and was a growing movement among Latin America’s nuns and priests. For decades, many have accused Bergoglio of collaborating with the junta and informing on these left-wing Catholics.
His response:
^This. The bar for a better pope is really low. I did, however, enjoy some Catholics freaking out over some of the more progressive things he said.
For people in Latin America who were part of the left leaning Catholics, such as myself, the pope, even with all his limitations, were good news. He also delayed the advance of some very reactionary elements in the Catholic church, which is still majoritary in Latin American countries such as Brazil. So even knowing his problems (including his participation in Argentinian dictatorship), I still think his term as the pope was positive.
It would have been better if liberation theology was the more de facto institutional catholicism.
If I see the Gospel in a sociological way only, yes, I am a communist, and so too is Jesus.
Edit: Sucks to learn about his past in Argentina though
I hope we get an even further left one so that Francis seems super tame in comparison and fox news can screech harder.
Marxist Leninist pope would be a very funny thing to see.
hopefully the next one is not another hitler youth freak like ratzinger
He dead
big if true
