Reminds me when I was a person from Switzerland living in the UK, and this girl started randomly talking to me in Swedish. And was super suprised when I seemed confused. Apparently, her friend had told her I was Swedish. 😭

Usually island means a larger land mass, not just a bit of dirt sticking out of a creek, so probably not. An å on an ö though probably.

The shorter a word is the more importance it has for a given language.

You are absolutely right, people on the internet have a tendency to not do the most basic things like hover over the comment to see the exact timestamps of what they’re criticizing. Sometimes they seem incapable of putting themselves in other people’s shoes for one second to realize that not everyone reads entire threads or looks things up because they have shit to do when they’re browsing during a short break. But what I find most baffling is when they forget common decency and etiquette, and instead deliberately opt to be a gigantic dickhead regardless of how confidently wrong or ignorant they are.

        Actually, yeah, kinda?

Like, there are only so many one-syllable words. Even fewer words that are just a single letter.

Generally you don’t want to waste them on complicated, niche concepts that only come up rarely.

At a basic level… yes? I think all those words are important enough in English to be short words. They’re important in a way that “theatrical” and “equally” are not as important.

And none of those words are as important in English as “a” or “I”.

Cuck is an abbreviation of cuckold. Once you get into muli-syllanbe words it doesn’t hold true. But over time, words that are used constantly get shortened and abbreviated.

One could argue that “god” and “man” (as in humanity) are pretty important concepts, and dogs and cats were probably more important to our ancestors than they are now.

But then there are words like gel, mop, wig, tug, and dam that kinda make that fall apart again.
