Am I reading that right? Was this supposed to be inspiring? How can you waste your time writing an opinion piece to defend your shitty parents, when clearly they should know the work you do better than most? Is it just because this is The Guardian?
Agreed 1000%. I come from a similar background as the author. I am the lone progressive/queer/agnostic/civil servant in my family of evangelical trumpers. I was really hoping this article could provide helpful insights, but it actually did the opposite.
Basically, ignore mom’s hatred of trans people and immigrants cuz her choco chip cookies meant so much to you growing up! Like wtf.
Every day I feel more lost in this country, and articles like this give me genuine despair. Feels like nothing is changing for the better.

It’s because it’s USAID. The “aid” part in its acronym is an intentional mislead. It’s actually a foreign influence and regime change operation, masquerading as an aid org to sneak in spies and support radical rightwing groups.
So yeah, I wouldn’t expect a progressive change take from a western spy.
