  • I wonder if theres going to be a split. Major platforms with all the slop, bots and ads, and then a more self hosted or volunteer ran services.

Personally I left the major platforms behind, says a lot if I say that Lemmy is the “biggest” platform I use these days (I don’t count watching YouTube without a account and never seeing the comments as using the platform in the “social” sense). Other than that, I’m on a small IRC network (we have about 150 people in total, 20-50 every day active ones and rest more or less active), same network hosts a old-timey forum, radio, git and something else that I’ve forgotten about, some of the people have Gemini capsules and stuff like that.

I much prefer the smaller place, theres less “noise” and I’m not demanded to do anything, nobody wants me to like and subscribe or watch/listen ads, nobody yells at me because I don’t subscribe to their politics 100%, nobody yells at me for asking a silly question about Linux, no. The radio has ads, but they are all jokes. Its less traffic, but I think the traffic is better quality. Like there might be days on the forum and theres no posts, there might be a few hours per day when nobody talks in the IRC, but that doesn’t bother me. Sometimes its good to not have a constant stream of stuff flying in your face.

  • I had to block that user for the sole reason of my brain stopping reading every time I saw that symbol, then I had to figure out what the hell it was before the brain unfuncked itself and could continue reading. I guess if I read that symbol every day, it’d get easier. But coming across that user every 3rd day or so, wasn’t really enough for my brain to start automatically figuring things out on the fly. And yes, my brain is stupid and it makes me stupid as well, I know this.

I’m already typing and reading in my 4th language, I don’t need to complicate my life anymore than that. So blockety-block-block is the answer.

  • Haha, thats a positive way of looking at it.

Now that you mentioned it, I think I’ve also started using social media less and less because of the extreme extremism that is going about. If you have a opinion that is not in one extreme or the other, you’ll get a bollocking from all sides.

Luckily I found a nice IRC network with nice people who are able to discuss things. Been spending my days there instead of doomscrolling Lemmy or reddit.

  • At times I’m starting to feel like there’s some sort of AI-derangement syndrome starting to take a hold of people. Some dude proposed a AI-dekstop thing (as a joke or a provocation, I feel like), everyone reacted to that proposal with a “what? lol, no.” then some media reports “KDE wants to turn into a AI-desktop!”, someone posts that to Lemmy (not this thread, a earlier one from a few days ago) and people lose their fucking minds, start talking about dropping KDE, going to FreeBSD and other silliness. Then for a few days these articles keep dropping, people keep getting upset.

Meanwhile, what is the official KDE stance? Seems to be pretty reasonable to me. I don’t know if the media needs to be less clickbaity and not pick up any stupid proposal by a random person, or should the people reading the media do a little it of more digging than just reacting to the headline. Probably a bit of both. But this whole thing is getting seriously silly. At this point you cant really discuss AI in any meaningful manner, at least not on Lemmy, because of the knee jerk reactions and extreme opinions.

Whats even more sad is that I feel like I need to add a disclaimer that I am not pro-AI, even though I don’t think I voiced an opinion on it, in the main part of my stupid rant. I feel like I need to add it, because if I don’t some people will just ignore what I’m saying and start going on at me about how AI bad and I should feel bad. Or something.

Anyway, if you read all that, I’m sorry to have wasted your time.
