20·1 year agoI have to tell you, that Action Park shit is still sitting with me… 😂
Seriously though, thanks for managing that community, it’s a good 'un. I’ve woken up many a morning to a wiki page you led me to lol
E: also, it’s 3:45am now, am feeling a little called out by op (though I had actually gone to sleep at 10pm too, it’s just that I’ve woken up since 😭)

Explain Like I'm Five@lemmy.world•My younger brother keeps saying he is an Alpha male and bad mouths who he thinks are Beta. Can some one please explain to me what the hell is going on?English
2·1 year agoYour brother is on a (specifically designed and heavily funded) pipeline to being a total piece of shit (not just with misogyny, but racism, and probably queerphobia and ableism too), do what you can to get him off it. A quick search brings up what looks to be some good info to start you off:
Misogynistic influencers are trending right now. Defusing their message is a complex task
De-radicalising incels out of the ‘manosphere’ through Reddit
There are also many youtube videos on the subject, though I haven’t watched any recently, so I won’t link, but look up something along the lines of “manosphere right wing pipeline” and you should see some results.

Memes@lemmy.ml•What's up?English
79·1 year agobeing patient like that definitely a skill that is not always easy to get right, and certainly takes practice.
What it mostly takes is mountains of privilege.
Not to mention that tone policing and demanding faux civility (but only from one side, the other gets to openly support oppressive constructs and still be seen as “well meaning” while those defending their humanity and fighting for survival get framed as the problem) are tools that serve to further oppress already marginalise voices, not uplift them.
Do better.

151·1 year agoWow, I feel both seen and very attacked 😂
I do all of this and more. It’s constant, and it’s exhausting.
He’s propaganda for American exceptionalism sure, but also embodies it in an old school New Deal way. The character has been consistently anti-facist over the years.
Pretending that America isn’t only already fascist, but inspired the fascists they are supposedly against is American exceptionalism, and you’re eating it right up.

62·1 year agoI’m certain you didn’t mean that they are, but the meme format kinda implies it, so I just thought I’d point out from here on that intersection that the two groups aren’t mutually exclusive😊
(also shout out to fellow enby and or agender afabs lol)
Otherwise both this and op are sadly spot on.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•I think we might be leaving the "boring" part of this dystopiaEnglish
48·1 year agoThe fact that anyone would need this amount of mental gymnastics to find reason enough to relate to the women potentially being targeted, to be against it, is pretty fucked up in its own right.
A large part of how patriarchy works is that men aren’t expected to, so often don’t, give a shit about the harm it causes until something impacts them directly, and even then, they will only actively oppose it if it harms them significantly more than what the patriarchy benefits them (toxic masculinity being a prime example of self harm many men are reluctant to fight).
Catering to this feature of the system only perpetuates it. Stop creating convoluted ways for them to relate (even “your mothers and sisters” shouldn’t be needed), and start expecting, and demanding, they simply consider and therefor treat all humans equally (which magically leads to caring about what happens to women just as much as they would if it were men under threat).

1821·1 year agoWas killing a murderous CEO a good and inspiring thing to do, and do we need to see more of that kind of direct action? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Is putting anyone, however much you might admire an action/s they took, up on a pedestal, ever a constructive thing to do? No.
Is spouting bigotry ever acceptable? Never.
And the only thing overlooking and brushing off bigotry achieves is more bigotry, and sending the message to the marginalised people around you that you care more about venerating a stranger who causes them harm but made you feel warm and fuzzy for a minute, than you do about ending their oppression.
This is why “no war but the class war” fails every time - intersectionality is essential, and if you don’t use your privilege to prioritise protecting those who are more marginalised than you, even from supposed allies (which a frankly terrifying number of people seem entirely reluctant to do) - then what the fuck are you doing? (enabling and participating in bigotry is what)
If you can’t deal with valid criticism of someone you consider a hero, you’re not a fan, you’re a cult follower, and nothing good has ever come from being part of a cult.
E: Just adding what I’ve seen so far, if your knee jerk reaction is to defend these posts, or brush them off as “error in judgment” or whatever (especially if you would be outraged if, say, some random MAGA had made similar statements, as I’m sure many have), you are saying that their content, and the people it is aimed at, are acceptable collateral damage to you.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Puberty blockers to be banned indefinitely for under-18s across UKEnglish
54·2 years agoMy understanding is by medical standards, the evidence is pretty low quality,
Your understanding is wrong and influenced by transphobic rhetoric, not “medical standards”, which have considered puberty blockers safe and effective since at least the 1980s.
The use of puberty blockers is supported by twelve major American medical associations, including the American Medical Association,[14] the American Psychological Association,[15] and the American Academy of Pediatrics.[16] the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry,[17] the Pediatric Endocrine Society,[18] the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,[19] the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists,[20] and the American College of Physicians.[21] In Australia four medical organizations support them,[22] as does the Endocrine Society,[23] and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).[24]
Overall, puberty blockers have demonstrated an excellent safety and efficacy profile in the treatment of precocious puberty. The most common side effects reported include nonspecific headaches, hot flashes, and implant-related skin reactions.[39]
E: and before you try throwing bone density at me, most of the people impacted are cis (and will not be stopped from taking blockers), and either way, there is simple treatment to counteract this minor issue (and which is completely insignificant when compered to the alternative). The ban is 100% motivated by transphobia and cruelty.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Puberty blockers to be banned indefinitely for under-18s across UKEnglish
579·2 years agoIt has settled the debate - our government hates trans people, and is actively withholding our human rights and going out of its way to harm us.
If that isn’t a pressing issue to you, you are part of the problem and a transphobe.

12·2 years agoI’m from (Scotland) but I would read about insurance and employer healthcare and be really confused, since up here everything (prescriptions, glasses, teeth) is free and there’s no insurance.
I’m in England, and I know there is a difference, but I highly doubt private insurers haven’t made it up your way, and are slowly carving the NHS hollow from within just like they are down here (a very superficial look confirms that hundreds of millions are already being spent on private firms carrying out NHS Scotland work).
People get denied NHS treatment all the time, if not directly (and yes, some directly, like trans people, but also disabled people with long term and complex cases, which I know from personal experience), then via cuts and waiting times.
Sure, we have it better than the yanks, and you up north have it better than us down south, but please lets not pretend our NHS is in good shape (or hands, Starmer has made it clear that he is for more privatisation), providing prompt and accessible healthcare, or not going the exact same way the US healthcare system is (often being bought up by the very same companies).
The last thing we need is to be getting complacent.

More like

(perhaps not in abolishing the system quite yet, but in finally understanding the inevitability of how that’ll have to happen)

Lol, I got my vegan card revoked (declared “a carnist”) and handed my first fedi ban by the “Real Vegans™” too, for daring to call out their bullshit and ableist militant gatekeeping.
Good luck to them and the toxic cesspit they’re so adamant on maintaining, the last thing anyone should be seeking is these people’s approval, especially not on being a “good” or “real” vegan, since they make it crystal clear that their top priority is and always will be their own egos. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
