I commented elsewhere that I wondered if they believe he’s innocent. If they truly believe this is a miscarriage of justice could these letters be written with his appeal in mind? There’s no physical evidence as I understand, maybe they’re going for the “this guy is so sober he wouldn’t even know how to get drugs” angle? I’m just talking out of my arse now but I’m so confused by the level of support for him I can’t help but clutch at straws to try to explain it.
I wondered if it was a “presented without comment” kinda thing? Shade on everyone without explicit condemnation? Maybe the writer was told to write a sympathetic piece and just couldn’t bring themselves to? The more I type the more wishful I realise this thinking is… 😕
No, but I have to say I’m surprised by the non-family members writing letters of character after he had been convicted of forcible rape. It’s one thing if it’s family I guess, or if the accused had been in the throes of addiction or similar at the time and had changed. But these are people who were working with him at the time he committed these crimes and they’re all testifying about him being such a good example of sobre living and a positive influence. Do they not feel betrayed by him? Do they not believe he did it? It’s strange.
And @SymphonicResonance is now a moderator in this community too.
Googling his own name? Or searching for it from within Twitter maybe?
Thank you for adding this. I’ll see if I can sticky it to the top for anyone who needs to see it.
It helps being smaller I think. On Reddit it was a relief if I posted something and didn’t get insulted/downvoted into oblivion, no matter how benign it was. The nicer people here seem less afraid of getting drowned out by arseholes. I like seeing the same usernames pop up too. I see blaze and 2-3 others all the time around lemmy - always supportive, always participating in good faith and basically making lemmy a better place to be.
Sounds good - we’ll become unconfidently_correct on April fools day.
I definitely do mean I can. Thanks for catching that I’ll edit.
When posted in !newcommunities I wrote the link to this community 4 different ways and every single one was incorrect. I’m a walking advertisement for this community!
I think you might be the nicest, most positive person I’ve come across on Lemmy! You’re very welcome, I’m glad you’re part of this community ☺️
TIL, thanks!
I like your style!
I need to find more opportunities to use “I don’t know what kind of ruse you’re trying to perpetrate” in my life. Preferably over completely banal things.
My car was stolen last week. 48 hours later my partner tracked it down and went to get it. The police hadn’t even requested the carpark CCTV in that time. We had to call the police to actually enter the place it was at so we didn’t get arrested for breaking and entering ourselves. The police will count this as their win, their solve even though they did practically nothing. They didn’t even arrest the guy who had our car. As useful as a chocolate teapot.
I wasn’t a mod on Reddit so I can only speculate, but I imagine that came from the admins not the moderators. It’s probably buried in the ToCs somewhere that your messages are monitored 😠FWIW, mods on lemmy/kbin definitely can’t see your private messages. Whether kbin can monitor your messages probably comes down to your instance owner/admin. I’d very much like to think that doesn’t happen but it might be worth looking into.
That caught my eye too, but I think it might be a reflection of how law enforcement speaks “a female suspect” “a male detainee” etc.
Without mods the trolls, bigots, and people just looking to argue and stir up shit completely ruin the community for the users looking to socialise/discuss etc. That nearly happened on this post with one user being so insulting, aggressive and argumentative I had to ban them. They made about 10 comments that broke the rules in under an hour and were borderline inciting violence against poor people. No one wants to socialise in an environment like that.
Also by creating a community here, I’m bound by feddit.uk’s rules and Lemmy’s code of conduct. If I don’t moderate, this whole community will be banned. I enjoyed the Reddit sub, I want to enjoy the community here too. If the only way I can do that is to enforce pretty basic rules, then so be it. I just wish people would stop calling me a power hungry narcissist plus a whole dictionary full of insults when I don’t deserve them.
This was nothing. I’ve had more abuse in the two months I’ve been a mod than I have in my entire life! But thank you for the support, I appreciate it!
Are they Scientologists too? I didn’t know that. It could explain why they’re publicly supporting him I guess.
