Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People outside the US, do you still consider America a democracy?
282·1 year agoFirstly, the USA is obviously not a “dictatorship”.
You sure about that? Have you read the news lately?
I use Arch, btw

News@lemmy.world•Video : Trump Rages at Zelenskyy in the White House
5·1 year agoThe exact same thing happened on January 6th. They initially expressed disapproval and dismay, but once the “it was just a riot, bro” narrative caught on all dissent vanished. They’d received their marching orders so they no longer had to face the terrifying prospect of actually having to think for themselves.

The sad thing is that it was fairly progressive then to have openly gay men on TV who weren’t there as either the butt of a joke or a flamboyant “gay bestie” stereotype.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can someone explain the framework of the current British... idk is empire the correct term?
7·2 years agoAnd being part of the Commonwealth, we still have the monarch as the head of state but have Governer Generals who perform the monarchs roles when they are not about.
This is true of Australia, but having the British monarch as head of state is not a requirement for Commonwealth membership - there are a few members that have their own heads of state.
Australia didn’t rebel like those dastardly yanks. We became an independent country in 1901.
Expanding on this a bit, while Australia did become its own country in 1901 our legal system was still linked to the British one and the British parliament could legislate for Australia until the Australia Act 1986 was passed, which cut all remaining legal and legislative ties to the UK leaving only the monarch as head of state.

News@lemmy.world•'Omg': Critics stunned as Trump caught 'endorsing The Purge' as a real policy at his rally
8·2 years agoUnfortunately the press and the peanut gallery have it very wrong on this one.
Deliberately. Comparing it to the Purge rather than the Kristallnacht gives the majority of people who only read the headline the wrong idea about what he actually meant, which derails the discussion towards “crazy old man says another crazy thing” rather than “crazy old fascist says another fascist thing”.

News@lemmy.world•Republicans worry Trump is having a ‘public nervous breakdown’
50·2 years agoI am absolutely convinced that Trump’s entire election strategy was to just coast to victory on “Biden old” and “I got shot”. By the time of the republican convention he was confident that he had it in the bag and didn’t need to keep trying, so when Biden dropped out it completely shattered his plan and he’s got nothing to replace it. He does not have the cognitive ability to pivot against Harris/Walz and his ego is way too big to actually listen to his campaign strategists (if he even has any that aren’t just yes men).
* this should not be interpreted as complacency. It is definitely not a sure thing that Harris will win
