Well that’s just plain silly.

How did this idea that Fedora is a no-brainer beginner distro take hold?
Any distro that leaves it up to the user to install proprietary drivers and codecs via command line and then a chunk of additional software before anything can get done is not beginner friendly by today’s standards.
First off, not all homeschooling is equal. On the one hand you have completely isolated, unstructured tutoring without any oversight by the local education board, and on the other you have organized remote learning and hybrid programs where the kids have a set curriculum and do their work online.
My daughter does the latter. She meets her homeroom teacher online with a bunch of other kids every day, and they meet up for group events and field trips once a month or so. She also meets up once a week with a local homeschooling group where they spend the morning studying then play together in the afternoon. She’s an outgoing, enthusiastic kid who loves making new friends despite the fact that she does get less social interaction with other kids than if she went to regular public school.
The reason we decided to homeschool is because we were traveling a lot when she was very young and we got used to the flexibility of not being tied down to vacations during regular school holidays. It has allowed us to take her on trips that she wouldn’t have been able to had she been stuck to the normal public school schedule.
That said, it’s not for everyone. Homeschooling properly is a full time job and you need to be very diligent and patient. However, I’ve seen it work first-hand, so don’t let people with no actual experience of homeschooling tell you that every homeschool kid is going to turn out a socially awkward pariah. Check out the options available where you live and see if it might be a good fit for your family situation.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Man posts his incorrect opinion onlineEnglish
3·1 month agoThat’s funny because, thinking back on it, I’d say about 90% of my friends and family were shoes on.
Perhaps it’s regional. I grew up in the South East, for reference. Not London, but in one of the surrounding counties.

6·1 month agoGrew up in the UK, in a “shoes on” household. We just gave them a good scrape on the doormat when coming inside.
Since then, I’ve lived in a few different countries and am 100% converted to the shoes off way of being. I agree it’s much better.

2·2 months agoIs observation creating reality — or creating an intersection?
If I understand the gist of the paper you linked and the concepts you mentioned correctly, aren’t they effectively the same thing?
As in, reality (as we perceive it) essentially arises from the intersection (or perhaps, interaction ) between observer and observed.
Side note: I find it interesting that the latest research emerging from theoretical physicists is increasingly reinforcing ideas that Buddhists and Vedic philosophers have argued for centuries. Namely, that the existence of individual selves is an illusion, and that all things are essentially temporary manifestations of the same, unifying, cosmic substance.

Climate@slrpnk.net•California exceeds clean car goal despite declining federal supportEnglish1·2 months agoIf I couldn’t charge at home, or regularly took very long trips, the EV wouldn’t make sense.
Precisely. Until the ease of refuelling becomes more competitive with ICE cars for the average user, EVs are not going to see mass adoption.
I just looked and my EV (a model 3) is 50 pounds heavier than my other car (a Lexus hybird sedan). That’s a pretty negligible difference.
The weight difference between an EV and a HEV/PHEV usually isn’t as dramatic as between an EV and an ICE vehicle. Plus you’re not comparing like with like (Tesla vs Lexus). A better comparison would be, for example, the Hyundai Kona EV (curb weight 3,803 lb) versus the gasoline Kona (2,855 lbs) - Source. That’s nearly 1,000 lbs of extra weight due to the battery pack and hardware.
All that extra weight means more power required for propulsion, which in turn means larger and more expensive battery packs. While this has gotten better over the years compared to previous gen EVs, it still makes EVs costly to buy and potentially repair.

Climate@slrpnk.net•California exceeds clean car goal despite declining federal supportEnglish2·2 months agoThe infrastructure is pretty good in California, sure, but I was thinking more about the US as a whole.
Also, the problem with lithium-ion battery tech isn’t just the range - it’s the charging speeds, and the weight/cost of the battery packs themselves.

Climate@slrpnk.net•California exceeds clean car goal despite declining federal supportEnglish7·2 months agoTarrifs are just the short term obstacle. The greater, long term obstacles are America’s over-reliance on cars and lack of EV infrastructure, along with the current generation battery technology no being quite there yet.

Android@lemdro.id•(Clickbait as of now) EXCLUSIVE: OnePlus Is Being DismantledEnglish
5·2 months agoTBH, if this turned out to be true, I would not be surprised.
OnePlus as a brand has been being slowly consumed by Oppo for years now, and it has struggled to maintain lasting appeal alongside its many competitors in the Asian markets:
India was supposed to save them. It didn’t. In May 2024, approximately 4,500 retail stores across six states stopped selling OnePlus products. The Online Retailers Association cited warranty delays and razor-thin margins—stores couldn’t make money selling OnePlus phones, so they stopped. The fallout: premium segment share collapsed from 21% to 6%. That’s a 71% decline in twelve months. Overall, India’s share dropped from 6.1% to 3.9%. The stronghold was crumbling.
If those numbers are accurate, then the situation for OnePlus really is brutal.

They specifically have the Bluefin variant for workstation and software development use:

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•is there any reason to try CachyOS over EndeavourOS or are they pretty much the same?English
4·2 months agoAgreed. I used and really enjoyed Endeavour back when I was happy spending time tinkering with my system, but these days I just want to either get on with work or game, and Bazzite/Bluefin/Aurora are ideal for this.

And the Webb version for good measure
