No, deductions for business expenses happen “above the line” so they reduce your taxable income. The standard deduction happens “below the line” and is applied to your taxable income after business expenses etc

Yep, it’s also convenient that most gun owners are in the “leopards would never eat MY face” side of that spectrum too
Pro tip: if you are actually making side income like this and reporting it to the IRS then in many situations you can deduct the costs of the things you needed to buy in the course of generating that income.
This does not work on W2 income, though, as much as it would be nice to deduct the costs of driving to an office etc

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•When you know your boss is an insane moron
5·22 hours agoI had a corporate job where I never interacted with customers and I was salaried and my boss would still keep Teams up on his computer all the time and come and check in on my cubicle if I wasn’t showing available on Teams exactly at 7:30 in the morning. I got lectured once for showing up at 7:35. Not late to any meetings, not late on “deliverables”, etc. Just not “professional” enough for him. I have no doubt believing this post.
Saw a post on reddit a while back that gun owners wouldn’t stand up for liberal causes because liberals keep trying to take their guns. Pretty thin argument but they’re all cowards so whatever straw there is to grasp I guess they will firmly grasp

This is a bit overdramatic as many gun owners have only ever shot at targets on ranges
Works better when spoken but just say this in your head really fast

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•New Hampshire Republicans want to raise taxes on homes with solarEnglish
25·3 days agoNew Hampshire is a joke. They’re the only state in New England without recreational cannabis and their license plates say “Live Free or Die”. They also have the second highest property taxes in the country. Their libertarian enclaves get overrun by bears because they’ve cut town budgets so much there’s no money for garbage collection. Nothing they do there is surprising.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people who try to convince others to switch to metric focus so much on the conversions?
3·4 days agoThe best arguments for metric is that you get to travel slightly faster for an equivalent speed limit (100 kph > 60 mph) and only needing to own one set if wrenches
The other major problem with this idea though is that the state with the most Republicans is California. So you need to deal with the fact that it’s largely an urban/rural divide, not a state/state divide. But even then Maine and Vermont have extremely liberal rural areas that buck that trend too. And optimistically I sometimes think most Republicans are victims of propaganda and that they don’t deserve to be left behind as a result of being manipulated by the wealthy.
Not every blue state is a net contributor. Vermont and Maine don’t deserve that fate

2·6 days agoI’m not saying not to do it, I’m saying you can’t just call for something on the internet and expect it to materialize out of nothing.
I’d also maybe suggest we stop using the term “general strike” when we mean “protest”

111·7 days agoYou have to build the ground work for that first. How do you feed people indefinitely when stores are closed, trucks aren’t moving, etc? You need a massive mutual aid network and solidarity. We don’t really have anything approaching that in the US

1·7 days agoIdk really, community organizing, forming mutual aid groups, etc. Getting out and talking to your neighbors. Just tired of seeing the same old double standards posted like it’ll matter, and nothing actually getting done besides furious typing

Above the line deductions reduce your taxable income, from there you take the standard deduction or itemize. You are conflating two separate events
