The US government isn’t in charge of one of the largest social media platforms in the world. US corporations are absolutely doing this as well, but that’s an argument for more regulation not to grant China free reign
US-run social media apps are pretty much now just arms of the US surveillance state, functioning both as pro-US propaganda machines, and tools to spy on the communications of the entire world.
For example, the most popular social media app in India for example, is facebook. The US controls the main method of news and communication for a country much larger than its own.
I removed this because it has nothing to do with linux specifically, and as expected, it brought out a lot of people defending the use of this historically racist term, and /asablackman’ing it.
I’ve reinstated it and removed the offending comments for now.
Also I don’t know why this needs a discussion at all. There’s hundreds of words in english for something that looks good, and you can be more specific about it : snazzy, sleek, cool, streamlined, nifty, retro
single event that happened years later makes no sense.
The genocide of palestinians didn’t begin in 2022. And the above commenter is correct, the US wants full control of its social media in order to spread pro-US foreign policy views, and tiktok is a threat to that.
That strategy kinda works too, because the law is always slower than tech, or new companies popping up. Plus its hard to roust US lawmakers to do anything but approve defense budgets.
Like the US is trying their damndest to keep Chinese phones out of the US, so they targeted Huawei. But Xiaomi, Oneplus, OPPO, Realme, and Nubia are all still growing strong.
1 comment later, equating anti-zionism with anti-semitism.
Side point, but I’ve added some additional settings and tweakability for votes here, that’ll be in the next major release.
Adds 3 options for post upvotes, comment upvotes, post downvotes, and comment downvotes:
So hopefully that will help fight vote brigading.
A really annoying cat.
horking noises 👀 👀 👀 👀
The microblogging format is truly awful. I’ve seen professors and incredibly smart writers get into childish feuds with each other, because the format almost encourages it by rewarding dunks and gotchas.
Forcing people to try to communicate over text without paragraphs, or any way to make themselves more clear, is not a good system.
This just shows that you haven’t been paying attention. Pro-palestine content is moderated off those platforms as “anti-semitic”. Raise your hand below if reddit has banned you for being anti-zionist.
Yeah, its just nice when they’re honest about it.
US republicans will be like: “8 men should own this country and everyone else can die in the gutter”. US democrats will be like: “We need to reframe the conversation about the lived experiences of so many of our constituents, and reach solutions that include these realities [policies not different from those above]”.
True, but when the US projects the crimes it commits against the world onto its enemies, we need to see actual evidence.
spy on american citizens
BTW is there any actual proof tiktok is doing what the above US companies are? And not just some vague orientalism from anglophone media sources?
Also lets not pretend a US tiktok ban has anything to do with security or privacy. It’s about being unable to silence pro-palestine views, which they’re able to do only on the US-run platforms.
This meme basically:
To OP’s point tho, I think the fediverse is a lot more ideologically diverse than reddit or other corporate platforms. The fact that you can say something positive about the Palestinian resistance without getting banned, or say something positive about a country on the US-enemy list, is a testament to that diversity.
Sure, there are many servers on the fediverse that are anti-communist, and orientalist / western supremacist, and block leftist ones, copying reddit’s moderation policy. But on the US-run corporate platforms(FB, reddit, twitter, bluesky), you aren’t given any option: that’s a non-negotiable default that you must accept. Here you can always join a server that’s willing to federate with leftist ones, and is okay with ideological diversity, even if you don’t consider yourself one.
He’s giving them $8bn in arms to kill Palestinians, so I don’t think that’s the case there. Obama did the same on his way out.
An stranger on the internet just gave you license to say a historically racist term, how convenient for you. Next they’ll be some /r/asablackman posters saying its okay for you to use the n-word, because it doesn’t bother them.
