From their website it looks like they’re “reselling” so, that’s my best guess as to why their bill would be so high

5·14 days agoNot sure this is what social media wants. They want to maximize shareholder value. The teen segment is crazy valuable since a lot of them are able to convince parents to buy them all kinds of shit. Without this segment, advertisers will turn to other platforms and thus remove lots of ad money from these platforms

1·14 days agoHaha fair point. Don’t know if you have kids but I do - Kids are extremely impressionable. So even without social media, but just online videos, some kids (luckily not my kid) go fucking crazy when you say “no more Minecraft videos”. And I know there’s a lot of parents that don’t take that battle, or that simply just don’t know their young teens aren’t sleeping but instead scrolling tiktok underneath their covers.

1·14 days agoI appreciate the thoughts you put into the comment!
I think I have a few comments that’s both for and against:
- it’s all about implementation: I’d hope for a token-based “I’m-an-adult” system - you’d be able to confirm age without vendor getting any other info than “this person is of age”, and with the government just knowing “you used a token somewhere” but the cynic in me tells a lot of places will use"protect the kids" as a pretext for more surveillance and implement it in shitty ways
- we’re being spied on anyways - this story is about high-level spying, but as far as I remember, they had access to all internet traffic

118·14 days agoso they shouldn’t do the ban? While we’re at it, perhaps let’s also allow gambling and purchasing alcohol for minors as well since parents should just do the parenting ;)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I am an American. I used to be proud of my country. Now it feels like a turd circling the drain. Is there anything going on behind the scene that America is actually doing good in?
2·24 days agoA trick is to acknowledge that there’s many alternatives. You can choose to be proud of your state, county, or simply just say “yeah my country is a cunt, so what?” And realize pride of your country doesn’t impact whether or not you’ve been a good, nice, or kind person.

Data is Beautiful@mander.xyz•Road fatalities per 100 000 inhabitantsEnglish
10·2 months agoI’d imagine if instead of per 100000 inhabitants, we used per million kilometers driven, we’d see more comparable numbers across countries. US has far more vehicles per capita than Denmark where I’m living. I’d also imagine people spend longer time in traffic in US.
So I don’t think it’s that driving is more dangerous there, rather it’s that you’re more likely to be in a car at any given time if you’re in USA. If you measured bicycle accidents per 100000 inhabitants probably the stats would be switched for DK/US.

They’re geographically shielded from Russia by Poland, Germany, France, and probably have less reliance on Russian energy. So having an alliance with USA is less important to them geopolitically. My guess at least
