ADHD@lemmy.world•Series: What are your ADHD Tools of Thumb?English
8·1 year agoTwo things for me… pomodoro method and the mantra “Don’t put it down. Put it away.” Pomodoro got me through college and made hyperfocusing on assignments seem like more of a choice. The mantra? It is part of my inner dialogue all the time lol. I tend to put things where ever and wouldn’t you know it? In a day my home is a mess. So once I heard the suggestion I took it to heart and it does actually really help me remember WHY to put things away. Because the “oh I will grab it and put it away later” is a lie.

ADHD@lemmy.world•How do y'all cope without meds?English
11·1 year agoTherapy? I react badly to all ADHD medications so I am not medicated for it. What has helped me the most is working through things with a therapist who also helped me with implementing coping mechanisms. Things like pomodoro method (this got me through college!), organizers at “drop spots,” and learning how to self talk made a huge difference for me. It is not impossible to do well without meds…it is just harder.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•I hate people like thisEnglish
32·1 year agoThe best solution I have seen to this was the guy I worked with, sick of people shaking the doors repeatedly while we were redoing signage after close exclaimed at some door shakers: “what the fuck you doing bro?!” Those of us in the store lost it and the customers walked away embarrassed. From your comment, I can tell you have not had a job that works with the general population directly like retail. You lose patience pretty quickly with others trying to complain to get their way, push boundaries, and sometimes just be assholes. You should try it sometime. It is quite enlightening.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?
13·2 years agoMy first experience with installing Linux on a hard drive involved wiping the wrong hard drive (my dad’s) and installing on it. Then panicking when Windows 95 didn’t boot up. Thank goodness my dad was understanding lol.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Why more Americans are making hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts
19·2 years agoA lot of what the person interviewed is saying is very tone deaf. Not everyone has the problem of not being “right sized” in how they live…a lot of folks are barely scraping by and have no other option but to tap into retirement to do things like…pay medical bills, not lose their dwelling, or simply make it through a hard time. Are there folks living above their means? Sure! But I would say the vast amount of people cashing in retirement funds early are not those people.
Thanks! I’m well past the darkest time in my life, thank goodness. I do appreciate your kindness. We need more of that in today’s world.
I was so broken in my early 20’s. I had been consistently struggling with college, did not understand myself, and just genuinely felt alone. It wasn’t until my 30’s and getting into a psychology class that I started piecing together that I have ADHD (officially diagnosed now), a sleep disorder that makes me tired unexpectedly and intensely, and just generally started to find who I was as a person. It took years of working with a psychiatrist and psychologist (therapist) to start unraveling years of negative self talk and also work through some religious trauma.
The one point I remember is I was thinking just how easy it would be to drive off a bridge…but I liked my car too much to do it. Those were rough times, but I made it through and haven’t been that low since.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•When is it okay to drop out of college?
2·2 years agoThis is a tough decision that only you can make. I have been in and out of college since 2003 and still have a few classes til my bachelor. What worked for me once I was in the field I wanted was to cut back to one class at a time and just gradually churn through. Depending on your school/work/debt situation this may or may not be doable. What really matters is to step back and ask yourself why you are pursuing school, if continuing now will pay off in the future, and if pausing and returning is something you would actually do if you left now. Does your workplace offer assistance for education? That can be a great help if you want to slow down.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•Public parks should have less parking to discourage drivingEnglish
201·2 years agoAs someone that has eaten my lunch in my car at a park…it is way more enjoyable than Walmart. Sometimes just that little amount of respite is all people can afford or have time to enjoy.

I just want to see the day where as a pedestrian I don’t feel like my retinas are fried every time a car passes at night or has their brights on during the day (ugh). I know it is wishful thinking because apparently politicians don’t give a shit about pedestrians (or cyclists).
