After a few more listens I think I can safely call this my favorite album from Mitski. Although I can’t say that I’ve given her other work as much attention as I’ve given this album. Perhaps there’s a reason for that.
The thing that has kept me coming back to this album is the opening track Bug Like an Angel. I love this song. The lyrics stand strong and emotional and with Mitski’s quieter delivery the backing choir acts as an exclamation point. The contrast between her and the choir gives me chills every time. This is just an excellent song.
The other song I want to mention is I’m Your Man. Honestly I just really like the outro with the dogs barking. It’s jarring and eerie in a really cool way.
Overall I’d say this a great album with emotional and impactful lyrics. I’ll probably come back to it a few more times and I’ll definitely at least listen to Bug Like An Angel some more.
Before Preoccupations and Viet Cong a couple of these guys were part of the band Women. Their albums are worth checking out too
Awesome choice! I wasn’t expecting a 2 month old album to make it to album club! But this one deserves the attention. I’ve given it a few listens since it came out but let me get one more listen in before I give any deeper thoughts.
Awesome! I think it would be a good idea to include a schedule for future weeks on the weekly post. Take a look at how hiphopheads is doing theirs.
Also can we set up an external group chat between you, me, and the other mods where we can discuss this and other community stuff? Lemmy direct messages don’t seem to be great and I don’t want to fill these threads with community discussion
Hey ren@lemmy.world are we doing this again this week? Do you need album suggestions?
Love this band. Especially their first 3 albums. But their most recent album (where this song is from) was really good too
Wow this is some hauntingly beautiful music. I highly recommend for any ambient music fans
This is less interesting to me than her previous album Glitch Princess. This sits more firmly under the alternative rock unbrella unlike Glitch Princess which was experimental glitchy pop.
So maybe check this out if you DIDN’T like her previous album haha
I’m confused by this band name lol. I was wondering if there was a typo. Nope it’s Slaughter Beach, Dog
In my opinion one of the best TV show themes is for House
This song is wild. Haven’t seen the video yet. Probably my favorite song from them though
So I dont have any sort of relationship or connection with R.E.M. I know the popular songs and I know I’ve listened to at least this album in full before but I probably didn’t give it proper attention.
So I listened to it and tried to give it my full attention. I wouldn’t say I’ve been converted to an R.E.M. fan but there are definitely things to like here. Two songs stood out to me the most so I’ll highlight a few things I liked from those songs.
My favorite track is the opener of this album, Drive. It’s just really great. I really like the darker sound and the non pop song structure. Obviously the Decemberists came after this but it kinda reminded me of them with the accordion. And then when the strings kick in halfway through it just has this epic sound.
The other song that stood out to me was Ignoreland. A bit more upbeat but there’s still a hint of darkness in there especially with the politically natured lyrics. The double-time vocal buildup before the chorus into the belted “Ignooooreland!” is my favorite moment.
Those are my thoughts. If you want to convert to a full blown R.E.M. fan let me know what to check out that’s similar to Drive.
I just saw her live this weekend! She was awesome. I love how glamorous and dramatic her performance was
I really like Space Invader. I’m excited to hear the rest of it this morning
Edit: Very good album. Space Invader and Smoke Detector are my initial favorites
Good song! They have more of a lo fi sound which I’m not usually into. But I really like this and the album they put out this year.
This was my thought too. To me they’re just fine. Nothing has clicked for me. I don’t ever have to desire to listen to them.
This is awesome. Love her voice and the energy. I’ll keep an eye out for an album
I love the guitars from this group and I appreciate their unique sound but I just can’t get into them. I thought maybe I just didn’t like her vocals but then I heard her featured on this Sleaford Mods song.
Force 10 From Navarone - Sleaford Mods feat Florence Shaw
I love her voice and deadpan delivery on this song. I think it works really well with the drum machine and DIY dirty synth sound.
So maybe it’s just the specific combination that Dry Cleaning put together that doesn’t work for me.
Eh it’s good but I’m not gonna make a separate thread about it. I didn’t find it to be as impressive as her debut album. Probably because her debut was an unexpected surprise for a pop record from a 17 year old. With this one I already knew what she was capable of and I feel like she didn’t push any “pop boundaries” that she didn’t already push with her debut.
I know it’s unlikely but I’m kinda hoping for a Scott Walker like career from her lol
Welcome! And thanks for the thorough write up! I’m glad you were able to emotionally connect with this album.
I think the barking dogs on I’m Your Man are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. It makes that song a bit more challenging and intense which I like.
