  • I think his only mistake was offering lifetime at all. Nobody knows the future of Lemmy; people are seeing $100 and getting a bit of a shock, we could buy two AAA games for that. A couple of dollars a month or annual is easier to justify. Then, if Lemmy does become the next big thing and lasts 20 years, the developer is taking a big hit. Lifetime at that price feels like there will be a loser for either the user or dev.

  • My problem is, I don’t fully understand how to defederate from it.

For example, if I subscribe to a community on an instance that isn’t defederate from Threads, and I post there, am I handing my data to Threads. I don’t understand where the line is at which my data is protected from Threads.

That is a serious problem for me that would make me stop using the fediverse.

  • It has made me feel like I am going to be giving up on most of the world.

When the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter came out the world was still learning about privacy, and the companies took it away in baby steps. People were already using it and addicted, so I can understand why they didn’t give it up.

This, however, is a new service by fucking Zuckerberg. I honestly think you have got to have something deeply wrong with your cognitive functions to sign up for a new service from that man.

For me, it concerns me that I am going to have to go out of my way to find instances that defederate from it, which is going to be a pain in the ass.

  • I think I have one of the few use cases that it is still useful for. I write textbook materials, the ability to have chatgpt write a short piece of writing saves me a lot of time. For example, ‘write an 80 word passage for a 2nd grade A1 esl learner about visiting grandma. Use the present simple tense.’

Or, make ten cause and effect sentences involving animals that live in the forest.

But even with those very simple prompts, I have to check it and usually ask it to change some vocabulary.

However, if I ask it to do anything with logic or even slightly complicated, it can’t do it, so I always wonder what the heck people are using it for.

For example, ‘list all the elephant and piggie books and fly guy books in order of AR level’

It can’t do it. Thats a pretty basic task, but it gets it completely wrong.
