  • One thing to bear in mind is that JP Switches are sold in two SKUs, a cheaper region/language-locked model and a more expensive unlocked model, and I’m assuming this is the cheap one. That means you won’t be able to access NA/EU eShops or play NA/EU cartridges, and games can’t be set to English language. If you’re fluent you may be fine with that, but do know that this is a thing.

Probably the biggest thing to keep in mind is that if you want to buy physical, that means you have to import all your games too. Which will probably end up costing you more in the long run.

No one complains when someone they don’t like gets into trouble for reasons that are obviously justified. The term “cancel culture” only gets invoked when someone on their side is in trouble for reasons they don’t agree with, in order to spin it into a persecution complex. But that’s all it is. And even the people who most loudly complain about “cancel culture” are always the first jump to cancel anyone on the opposing side - because they’re obviously always in the right, so it’s only “cancel culture” when the other side does it.

Even your dictionary link can’t clearly define an actual line, because there isn’t one.

  • I’m actually going to say this nonsarcastically. In its defense most of the movie is still pretty funny, but the eugenicist intro is really bad. It would’ve been better if you’d chopped that off and said he’d just been isekai’d to a world of stupid people.

Really though I’d say the part that’s aged worse is maybe not even the film itself but the way that people keep trying to compare it to the present day. Idiocracy is a world of well-meaning idiots who still have hearts of gold, and the day is saved when they step aside and let the smartest guy in the room figure things out. That is the exact opposite of the problem we’re facing today, where the villains at the top are very smart and very evil, smart enough to know how to use stupid people as puppets for their selfish aims. Idiocracy doesn’t even have any true villain in it.

  • I’m in various FGC circles, and when Twitter had… I don’t even remember which of its many controversies, it was a few years ago, but something or other resulted in fgc.network being launched and I immediately signed on to the idea of a federated alternative that no CEO can destroy.

At the time I also did peek around some of the other parts of Fedi, uploaded some of my Splatoon stuff to PeerTube but it was a complete ghost town. My first impression of Lemmy was that it wasn’t there yet, not enough critical mass.

Then Reddit had its API debacle, and I decided to commit to trying Kbin for a while, for at least as long as the blackout lasts. My impression was still that it wasn’t ready to replace Reddit, that it unfortunately can’t replace the kinds of niche hobby and fandom communities I used Reddit for, but I thought Kbin’s software felt like it had more potential, and I would stick with it. Then the Reddit admins turned sour, the sub I moderated that participated in the blackout had our mod team threatened by the admins, and I knew I was just never going back to Reddit.

  • I tried it briefly, but in addition to the software itself feeling rather behind, I don’t think it can solve the major problems I have with Discord.

The biggest problem I have with Discord is that it is ‘underground’, siloed away from the open web and unable to be indexed by search engines. I don’t want a Discord Alternative that is just the same thing but federated, I want all the communities that have moved to Discord to come back to the open web, whether that’s traditional forums or here on the Threadiverse or something else. In fact, I think Threadi would be a very good fit for a lot of the improper use cases Discord currently gets used for.

And the secondary problem, of course, is the network effect. Nobody I want to talk to is using Matrix. All the communities that have kept me tied to Discord against my will, are on Discord. And sadly I don’t see much chance for that to ever be overcome.

  • In theory, anything can be derived from first principles, even if you have to just plug test digits in until you find a contradiction. In practice, good luck - I’m bashing my head against a wall on this latter half. I don’t think pure sudoku techniques necessarily get you that far on their own anyway, the real difficulty comes from all the unique mechanics.

If you’re truly truly stuck, there are walkthroughs on Youtube, I’ve had to resort to getting getting a hint or two or three sometimes.

Or you can try Super Sudokoid: Final Transmission for an easier starting point, I actually solved this one unassisted before moving onto Sudokuvania 2.

  • Legally, no. The law does not carve out any kind of exceptions here.

Ethically, it’s not a lost sale if you never could’ve bought it in the first place. And I don’t think it’s fair to audiences to say they just don’t get to enjoy the media at all if it’s not officially available. If official means no longer exist, then piracy is preservation.

Morally, creators still do deserve compensation for their work, one way or another. So if you can’t buy the work directly I think it’s good to try and find other ways to support the creators if possible - such as buying merchandise or other projects they’re involved with.
