Well, to be fair, if rimu just went AWOL - it wouldn’t matter what piefed instance everyone went to. The development process would stop and Piefed would degrade.

I know that Rimu does want to make it so subscribers from a community migrating are transferred. But I imagine this would only work for users based on piefed instances.

Well currently Piefed is growing prominently from Lemmy users. Most of the audience are ‘ex-Lemmy’ users.

Piefeds users don’t tend to be tankies or campists, and Piefed.social itself is defederated from Hexbear and Lemmygrad.

Not speaking to this person or post specifically but this is what can blight all reddit alternatives. The first wave that arrives often includes a disproportionate amount of malcontents. A lot of people who don’t play well with others, who are banned from reddit (or at least banned from lots of subreddits) usually turn up first on these reddit alternatives and disrupt the community by repeatedly showing anti-social or disruptive, attention seeking behaviour. It’s not even necessarily related to any political persuasion.

The first wave of new users on reddit alternatives are, in my experience, more likely to have a lot of problem users and since the sites are so small, and usually sparsely moderated, they are much more disruptive than they would be on reddit.

Oh yeah, I don’t know how Reddit will deal with many mods just making alt accounts tbh. This sort of rule should’ve always have been the case on Reddit but bringing up the drawbridge now will potentially cause some problems for them at least in the short-term.

What will happen to all the mods that exist that mod loads of subreddits over those numbers? They just randomly expel them from subreddits if they don’t choose which ones to step down?

Sure, but it’s not at the level of decline some doom about here. It’s mostly stable.

Oh yes, it has some impact - but the slow decline of Lemmy instance activity has to be contextualised with whats going on Piefed (and to a lesser extent: Mbin)

When instances close, users tend to just disappear (as when Lemmy.ee closed down). The Lemmy.ee users seem to have just disappeared instead of migrated to another instance.

I suggest you look at the piefed activity indicator for more context here.
