You may say socialist, but not exactly Marxist socialist. It’s more like nationalism with some socialist elements, or maybe a Saint Simonian socialism.

Right, and hence why the whole project might now be destroyed. You really have to establish the dictatorship of the proletariat in order to guard a socialist project from aggression.

Because they failed to control capitalist forces that the US will leverage to overthrow socialism. Go read up on Chile and how Allende was overthrown and Pinochet installed after. This is basically the same scenario.

I do think the Venezuelan “Bolivarian socialists” failed to establish control over capitalists (or capitalist property) and they are paying the price. I do have many disagreements with their line. However I don’t think it’s fair to equate the situation of Maduro with Allende’s. Maduro is in a much stronger position and deposing PSUV from power won’t be as easy as deposing Allende.

Nah, the Allende case won’t happen because Venezuela had a lot of military purges throughout the years to the point that the WSJ lamented that Venezuela is Coup-Proof -> https://archive.ph/IfL1n

The only military left are strongly ideological aligned with the leadership and anti imperialist to the point that the show it proudly:

This time it will be different. If the US invades, it will be the death of their empire.

I really hope you’re right and Venezuela can withstand the onslaught. I’m worried that the US is basically planning to do what they did in Iraq and raze a chunk of the country to the ground.

Exactly. It was very important that Chavez was a military officer. They did very important things to strengthen their power, one of them was purging reactionary elements from the armed forces. The other was creating a militia from popular elements, which can be quickly drafted and can support the government in case of need.

Maduro has said in an interview that calls himself ‘A Marxist, a Bolivarian, and a Christian’
