    he means in the context of “liberating crimea and Donbass” , he is saying they can’t do it without taking considerable amount of losses and even if they manage to it will be total destruction.

      Except those won’t result in “defeating Russia”. So I still fail to see why it needed to be phrased this way

          Oh sure. Losing Crimea (in this scenario) even more so (there’s a fleet base). But I still wouldn’t call it a defeat. Defeat implies some very specific things - imposing one state’s will on the other and forcing it do what its told
