Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So, how’s it going?
You know, it’s hard to beat that feeling you get when you nail a reverse park first time.
@Axisential @Dave I have a natural talent for parallel parking and revel in it. I feel like a hero when traffic is backed up and I need to parallel park. No worries fam, I think to myself, I’ve got this one.
Oh man, parallel parking with a line behind you! Gotta love when you pull forward indicating you’re gonna do a parallel park, and the car behind you follows you up close behind you. Then they can’t go back because they have a car behind them, you can’t get into the park, everything is stuck.
Extra fun when they are honking at you for blocking traffic when it’s their fault.
Ok it only happened once, but I’m still bitter about it.
This is a weekly occurance for me, atleast. The other classic is traffic overtaking you so you cant start the parking procedure. Often Only 1 in 10 of those , in my experience, are willing to give up 20seconds so you can get into the park, in order to reduce the risk of a collision with oncoming traffic - since the overtaking crosses the centreline. And more often than not the other 9 are just rushing to get to a queue of cars at an intersection only 100 metres ahead, which they could clearly see. Designing cities around cars is idiotic, and the whole being in charge of this clunky inefficient stupid machine alters the behaviour of some people in strange ways, the most concerning of which is a disconnect with the physical reality of driving in relation to safety. Id like to hope those 9 in 10 overtakers are smarter in every other aspect of their lives. I can only take personal responsibility for myself , i.e its my fault I drive.
Oh if cars are overtaking I just keep going and do my thing. They will stop if they can’t get past.
TBH I don’t do an awful lot of driving (work from home 95% of the time) so I don’t get a lot of opportunity for crazy drivers anymore.
@Dave crazy story but this just happened after my message. A car pulled up to my bumper and wanted the park i was reversing into. The lady refused to move!
Bugger that, I had nowhere to be and can stay stubborn longer than her lack of shame can last.
Haha holy crap! I have to say I’ve never had something like that.
Reversing cameras have made it too easy. Nailing it without a reversing camera makes you feel extra awesome 😆
We’ve got a 360 camera on the car we bought a few months ago. It’s still an achievement for me to reverse into a park even with that!
The trick is to get good without it first. Then having a camera makes it feel like cheating.
Though I don’t think a 360 view is as helpful as you’d expect. The view directly back is more helpful I think, in combination with using your wing mirrors and looking out the back window.
