“My account was showing the water usage for my neighbor,” she said. Austin Water has so far, installed about 168,000 of the 250,000 meters. The company expects to be done by 2025.
KXAN Investigates wanted to know how many other customers have complained about suspected inaccurate readings from the new meters. But we didn’t get the records because an Austin Water spokeswoman said the company doesn’t track that information.

how many other customers have complained about suspected inaccurate readings

This number would probably be two or more orders of magnitude higher than the number of customers who have a legitimate complaint. I bet overall the accuracy of readings on smart meters is significantly better than it was with people physically looking at your meter and recording the number. KXAN trying real hard to make this sound controversial

Yeah I used to peripherally consult on smart metering infrastructure. Someone goofed with the address in the system, I’m sure it happens, but I’m sure it is way more accurate overall.

Fun fact, with a $20 dongle you can often pick up these transmissions with some open source software. They are very boring.
