I know I’m in a bubble, but it’s wild to me that people pay money and still watch ads. I figured we had moved on from that.
Realistically everyone is on their phones, so when an ad plays people just tune them out but still.
I think there are people who feel ads are how they keep up with the world too. But this is a small subset group. But I think it exists.
I say this because of how I see people talk about algorithms on social media. And they are often talking about “discovering” and people promoting stuff on social media is just another sort of advertising. People advocate for the reach that algorithms provide.
Anyway, just some scattered thoughts here. The bottom line is that advertising is a normal part of existence for some people. And they can’t imagine it not being part of things. “How would companies survive?! How would I know about XY or Z?!”
But I’m with you. I can’t stand advertising, and any time I’m exposed to what’s new and normal in tv advertising I’m always horrified. Horrified at what is now normalized. Horrified at how it depicts society. Horrified at what sorts of consumer behavior it normalizes through depicting consumption and use of things.
Netflix claims a lot of things. Meanwhile…

Maybe if their prices in the US were as cheap as they are in emerging markets, they wouldn’t have to lean so heavily on the word “worldwide” in their PR.
Fantastic news! All aboard the enshittificstion train!
