So yesterday I was talking about vocaloid music to a friend of mine and how only the paid ones are called vocaloids and the free ones utau. So I decided to set up a small showcase of the open source program.

The setup was incredibly simple and the github is very well layed out. After the installation you have to add in whatever singers you need (called voicebanks). I personally went to the official teto website, since they make it very easy.

And this is the end result! Picture of open utau with teto on it

Overall, this was a very fun couple hours learning and I am just peeking into an abyss of musical possibility I am glad that it’s available to anyone with a computer.

Where would I start learning about this?

I’ve been wanting to stop using samples for vocals (copyright protections be damned, I just dislike jumping to a Splice sample or pack a friend shared) and I was debating on a vocaloid but also I make future garage and rap over it so my genre is already a weird mix lol

Edit: nvm, I see you did provide links. Gonna try it out!

I feel there’s no way the owners of vocaloid would be able successfully argue that the free versions are not also able to be called vocaloids. The term is practically synonymous with all computer generated human vocals in an anime style.

TIL about the free version of the vocaloid-like software though.
