I’m already upset that M$ basically killed off every cool Surface to focus on the Copilot shit. What’s fancy new hardware gonna do? Make it easier for them to spy on me while I use their mediocre, most-profitable computers?

The ISA was published 11 years ago and many companies have been shipping hardware for years now; you can even get a RISC-V mainboard for a Framework laptop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RISC-V#End-user_hardware

Unfortunately the performance is more comparable to a raspberry pi than a modern x86 PC; the faster ones are still coming soon.

You can follow RISC-V developments here on lemmy at !riscv@lemmy.ml btw

I would like to add that “faster ones” did exist but were really really limited edition. And also full of backdoors making them not feasible to host a pubnix on. Was reading 9front IRC logs out of boredom once and someone mentioned a maintainer being given a server of sorts then someone replied “ah yes, Plan 9 on unobtanium v”.

When y’all are so out of ideas your new idea is selling computing as a utility/service

Enshitiffication is too nice of a word, too fancy, too classy and eloquent of a word

This is just lazy horse shit

It’s not even a process of making it shit slowly like a frog being cooked alive by gradually making the temperature hot

Now it’s just the bottom falling out

The lack of any decent idea has become an accomplishment

Making things worse is progress now

Shareholders who don’t even understand fuck all about functionality, security or contextual use awareness are now steering the collective ship of consumer technology into some kind of shit dimension

An asteroid belt of sheer bullshit, horse shit and God knows what other kinds of shit

The shit stank is monumental and I can’t even plug my nose to try to ignore it anymore

I don’t wanna become Amish but I also don’t want to exist in a world with not only this kind of insulting cash grabbing technology whoding nonsense but so many other ridiculous unnecessarily wasteful ills and evils that it makes me head want to explode

The one solace I have is that the people who are 100% in on this are also the people who were 100% in on the metaverse and that was always obvious to me that it was going to fail.

I do believe this is all going to fail. They’ve worked harder to propagandise me into uncertainty about that with the collective delusion they’re trying to enforce but I still believe it will all fail.

Look into Framework laptops if you haven’t. Basically everything is replaceable/upgradeable, even the main board.

But yeah, if you’re looking for a good inexpensive laptop, I would go with the T480 as another commenter suggested. They’re a bit dated, but they’re very repairable machine. Buy one with a good amount of RAM. Throw an SSD in it and install something like Linux Mint or Pop!_OS and you’re good to go.

Tbh i’d never invest in a laptop but i have no interest in having a Good Computer that’s also mobile. PCs are for gaming and shit, my phone does all the carrying around the internet i need

but in the context of my needs the modularity of PCs means they effectively last forever if you’re just replacing stuff that breaks, computer of theseus y’know. But maybe laptops have gotten easier to work on idk (doubtful though)

Used T450-480 can still be found for fairly cheap on ebay, although it may be somewhat location dependent now that shipping is fucked.

They’ve traditionally been a great value proposition because they’re sold en masse to corporations that upgrade every year and offload the old ones, so there’s an oversupply of lightly-used enterprise laptops. I’d never buy a thinkpad new and I’d never buy any of their consumer models.
