It’s actually thought to draw from the original image that inspired the character of Gandalf, which is Der Berggeist (“the mountain spirit”) by Josef Madlener. The “pondering my orb” meme is a painting by Angus McBride, and it’s of Saruman gazing into a palantír. I think it’s probably Gríma in the background, though they look a little hobbit-like.
