Apple's unusually timed announcement of new Mac mini and Mac Studio models this week was driven by unexpectedly strong enterprise appetite for AI hardware, according to The Information. Apple normally releases new Mac models in the autumn, closer to October or November, making this week's announcement unusually early, falling just before the anticipated arrival of new iPhone models. The Information says that the AI-driven boom in Mac Studio and Mac mini sales is behind the early launch.

    I never needed a Mac mini but looks like I’ll be holding onto my M1 MBP until the wheels fall off. The prices are insane now.

    They built their M series chips with this use case in mind. The shared high bandwidth memory was perfect for this.

      You can lock it down. Don’t log in to apple services or install the stock LLM, add and configure Lulu, run open source apps, install homebrew, and so forth.

        APFS is slow, system monitor pegs your CPU as subagents spawn many processes, sandboxing is decent but nowhere near what Linux can do. If you want to run AI agents 24/7 and as fast as possible, Linux is the next level by far. Apple is a hardware company. Their software gets nerfed by company policy and chronically underfunding their teams.
