And pulling the back the camera a little bit, tutoring is funded by parents wanting to pull up their children’s score so they can get into “good schools.”
Once they get there, who is going to teach them, what will they learn?
I haven’t heard a good strategy to counter AI in students evading learning yet, and since a good strategy would requiring failing students, I doubt universities are motivated to find one.
And once you graduate with your expenisve degree (even if its paid for by the state, it’s still four years of your life), what job is waiting on the other side to have made that worthwhile?
generate their own practice questions, to generate their own essay marking guidelines, and to test themselves on their essay writing
This might be useful for certain high school students who are disciplined enough to use it to enhance their learning instead of doing their work for them, but for every other kid, I definitely would not recommend just putting them in front of ChatGPT and letting them have at it. Parents could perhaps perform the quoted tasks to assist the student, but then again, they’d be taking on the role of a tutor in that case, and many parents would prefer to hire someone for various reasons. AI is also not going to provide the external discipline that some kids need to stay focused and get their work done. So no, AI does not replace tutors.
